The iFi nano iCAN is the battery-powered, half-sized version of the multiple-award winning micro series.

For many, enjoying music requires the component to excel in both a ‘static’ high-end system as well as a ‘dynamic’ portable system. The nano iCAN fits this bill perfectly. Able to take RCA or 3.5mm inputs, running on lithium-polymer battery power, enjoy music wherever, whenever, whatever.

The nano iCAN maintains the iFi tradition of excellent sonics with canyon-deep bass. Its supreme circuit design uses DirectDrive technology; without the need for output capacitors.

Introduction

The world of high-end audio constitutes various peripherals that aim to enhance your existing setup. Headphone amplifiers are usually the first thing to look out for when shifting to the world of high-end audio.

The iFi nano iCAN is the somewhat smaller version of the bigger iCAN. It’s battery operated, making it easily portable and you can literally bring it anywhere, anytime. The internal battery can give you enough juice for more than 70 hours – it’s that awesome.

Design and Setup

The iFi nano iCAN fits just right in the palm of your hand, and with the included rubber bands you can pair it easily with any audio device. This device features DirectDrive technology that offers a direct signal path with a 150 mW output that would allow a more emphasized sound experience.

Two RCA jacks are present on the iFi nano iCAN, including a 3.5 mm audio jack along with a 6.35 mm TRS headphone jack. There is also a rotary volume control that also acts as the main power switch for the amp. Below you will find recessed DIP switches that lets you select +6dB or +18dB of master gain.

The iFi nano iCAN also feature the 3D HolographicSound system for and the Xbass sound enhancement system with their own dedicated switches.

Once fully charged you can simply run the 3.5 mm cable from your audio source and then connect your choice of headphones to the iFi nano iCAN.

Performance:

I tested the iFi nano iCAN using the Hifiman HE400S headphones and connected them to a variety of audio sources.

Audio output is excellent, especially coming from a smaller version of the iCAN. Even the enhanced features like 3D HolographicSound allowed me to experience a more soundstage-like effect from the headphones. The Xbass feature added a decent level of low frequency effects that gave my tunes just the right amount of oomph.

I primarily use my iPhone as my main audio source and as soon as you plug in the iFi nano iCAN in between, the differences between the sound is immediately noticeable. Sound output is warmer, with each tone echoing with superb clarity.
