Cowon Releases Plenue J Portable Music Player

Whilst Cowon isn’t exactly the most well-known manufacturer of high resolution audio products, they certainly have quite a large product portfolio. They’ve made a number of personal/portable music players over the years, with their Plenue line being their top-shelf DAPs. Recently Cowon released yet another DAP – the Plenue J

The Plenue J

In a nutshell, Cowon describes their journey of making the Plenue J as follows:

“We set out on a mission to create the perfect portable DAP. What could we do to make the next portable device even thinner, lighter, and longer-lasting? We realized, however, that despite everything,

the most important element to pursue was the essence of pure sound. That, and more, is what we captured with the PLENUE J.”

Well, then, it certainly seems like they are indeed very proud of their new baby. Spec-wise the Plenue J has a 2.8-inch (240×320) touch panel, and is built around a DAC that is capable of decoding up to 192KHz/24-bit (but no DSD support), which manages an SNR of 123dB, THD+N of 0.003%, and stereo crossatalk of -105dB. Those are pretty darn impressive numbers, and yet, the device is reportedly still able to attain a total continuous playback time of up to 53 hours (MP3, 128kbps). No details of exactly which DAC chip has been given, though.

The Plenue J definitely is an attractive little number, however, it’s not all sunshine and roses, unfortunately. According to the specs and features list published on Cowon’s site, the Plenue J doesn’t seem to offer a balanced output, line-out, no mention of any type digital output, nor any Bluetooth capabilities.

Price and release

There doesn’t seem to be any mention of pricing or availability online so far, although it’s perhaps not unreasonable to make an estimate of around $300 – $350.
