The Best Five Dolby Atmos Movies Of All Time

Dolby Atmos is a surround system technology that uses specifically placed speakers and audio to create an experience of “3D” sound. By putting speakers not only next to you, but also in front, behind and above you, any audio in games or movies gains more dimension when sound creators specify from which direction the sound should come from.

So basically, if there is an airplane that passes over you in the movie, you will hear the sounds from above, and the more speakers you have, the better the quality, depth, and accuracy will be. Even though lately Dolby Atmos is present in most of the new releases, not all of them are made to fully use its potential, so here are some Dolby Atmos movies that you can watch in your home theatre that utilize Dolby Atmos and really show the effects that can be achieved with it.

John Wick Chapter 2- Dolby Atmos Movies

If naming movies with pretty aggressive use of Dolby Atmos, movie John Wick Chapter 2 should definitely be there, of course in 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. Even in the first scenes during a car chase, you can hear the tires from each direction as the car moves, as well as in later scenes when there are gun fires and explosions. But, to show all aspects of Atmos in the movie, there are also scenes that create more calm ambiance such as rainfall or city at night. Overall, the movie has a lot of moments where your sound system works at its full capacity.

Mad Max: Fury Road- Dolby Atmos Movies

Many who watched Mad Max: Fury Road movie in full Dolby Atmos atmosphere will sincerely suggest it, even though it was only later transferred to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. The sound uses all available speakers and manages to create different effects from a windstorm where you feel like you are right in the center of it, to a much soft wind in a desert. As many other Dolby Atmos-based movies, it has an amazing scene at the very beginning, in this case when Max fires up his car. This is definitely one of the scene that will show you how far Atmos’ can go and what can it achieve, especially when it comes to bass.

Gravity- Dolby Atmos Movies

If you are looking for a movie to see the possibilities of Dolby Atmos, you should definitely take Gravity into consideration as a demo for it. The movie is not in 4K, but it is still a very good example of Atmos that is available only in Diamond Luxe Edition in Blu-ray. As the whole scenario of the movie is in the space, what makes the experience even better is the fact that Atmos was incorporated in such way that through sounds, you feel like you are slowly spinning with the aircraft, as the radio speaker from the scenes slowly shifts from one to another speaker around you, in circles. This especially gets to you during crash scenes when the sounds quickly change direction all around you.

The Matrix- Dolby Atmos Movies

Yes, we are adding The Matrix to the list, even though it was released almost 20 years ago. In May 2018, it was released again but this time in 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray. Most of the original sound crew was recruited to expand the original sound in the movie using the Dolby Atmos. The original sound was kept authentic but now with more effect through sound coming from all directions. Atmos really brings up this science-fiction movie to a new dimension, with every fight scene and bullets fired heard like they are flying above you. And yet, the dialogue is still very much understandable through each scene.

IT- Dolby Atmos Movies

Dolby Atmos works well even for horror movies, so if you like that, IT might be a pretty good choice. Originally it was not filmed in 4K, but a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray version is available. Atmos is active throughout the whole movie and it catches even the small details, like leaves on the ground or just street noise. At the same time as the movie is still a supernatural horror, Atmos helps create an even creepier feeling than what is on the screen, as the base gets very low, to the point of even giving you goosebumps. In one of the scenes, girls voice starts from behind and slowly circles around you as it advances to the front speakers giving you a whole horror experience,

Besides these, you can visit the Dolby website and check whether Atmos is present in your favorite movies in the past 6 years, as well as some scheduled for premier in 2019.
