Galaxy Z Flip Design & Specs Rumors [UPDATED]

Samsung’s first foldable smartphone, Fold, has had quite a complicated release due to technical difficulties requiring the company to redesign the folding mechanism. Despite the delay, Samsung Fold was released again but not too long after, rumors had it that the company is working on the second generation towards which it will approach in a different way. So, here is what we can expect from the Galaxy Fold 2, or what might be known as Galaxy Z Flip.

Name: Galaxy Fold 2, Galaxy Bloom or Galaxy Z Flip?

Until the CES 2020 meeting between the president of Samsung and the telecoms executives, it was believed that Samsung’s upcoming foldable smartphone is going to be named in consecutive order after the first Galaxy Fold. But, at the private meeting, Samsung announced several smartphones among which was also Galaxy Bloom: a clam-style foldable smartphone with the design rumored to go with Galaxy Fold 2.

Despite the official poster shown at the meeting, we believe that Galaxy Bloom might be just the internal code name for the device, while the public name is going to be Galaxy Z Flip. The well-known leaker Ice Universe revealed the name on Twitter, but the official name will most likely be confirmed at the already set launch date.

Galaxy Z Flip Official Press Renders

The latest leak that was revealed regarding Z Flip was by Roland Quandt, showing the press renders of the upcoming foldable smartphone. Except for the design, he did not reveal much more than what we already knew about the design itself, the display or the specs which you can read more about below. These are the renders.

[UPDATE]

Hands-on leaks of Galaxy Z Flip slowly started appearing from several sources, showing exactly how Samsung’s new foldable smartphone is going to look. Not only does it show how easy it is to close and open in the hand, but it also shows that it is in fact going to be quite a tall device, with the expected 22:9 screen ratio. Furthermore, the display on the outside is clearly visible and contains the date, time and battery percentage as expected.

Galaxy Z Flip Design

The first and most obvious design feature of the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip is the ability to fold. Following the idea of the statement that the second generation of Samsung folding phones is going to be approached in a new way, it is most likely that it will not open in the same butterfly-kind of way, but rather like the old flip phones. The new model was also confirmed in Samsung’s official video that shows “a new form factor for foldable smartphones” shown below.

This means that when the phone is opened, it will be very similar to the S smartphone series and won’t have the primary and secondary screen option which was the case with the Fold, but rather only one main display. When closed, it will also have a small 1.06-inch panel that will give you quick access to some basic info such as battery and time. The main display was leaked to be 6.7 inches when fully opened and further rumors pointed out that it is also going to feature an Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) display. Even though at the first thought, everyone would be confused by the choice because the glass is not really known to be the most bendy material possible, but according to the rumors the device is going to have a very thin crease that will ease the whole opening and closing of the device. UTG display is also more scratch-resistant than the displays used at the moment.

Furthermore, there is a new capability of the Z Flip that we haven’t been aware of at first, but according to several sources, the device can also be locked in a 70-degree and 110-degree position beside the normal 180-degree full-screen smartphone mode. This particular feature is considered to be aimed at video calls or other camera apps, including Google Duo.

Finally, the colors have also been revealed, confirming that the upcoming Z Flip is going to be available in Black and Purple color options (purple can be seen in the press renders above).

Galaxy Z Flip Features

There is a lot of features leaked already about the Galaxy Z Flip, with more to come in the upcoming month before the official release date. Except for the model number SM-F700F,  we also know that it will run Android 10. Based on previous news from Samsung, there are certain changes made to the One UI 2 that will add a couple of convenient tricks for the foldable phones. As the price is expected to be lower than that of the first generation Samsung foldable phones, we are yet to see what are the features the company will cut back on.  It is important to note that at the moment, its most immediate competitor is the Moto Razr which is already available for pre-sale. It will be interesting to see how they compare.

For a while, all we knew about the battery life of Z Flip was that it will have a dual-cell battery structure and that one of them is expected to be 900mAh battery. Further rumors point that it is going to be accompanied by either a 3,300mAh or a 3,500mAh battery. When it comes to other internals, you can count on 256GB of storage, 8GB of RAM and Snapdragon 855+ processor. There are also rumors of 5G connectivity which is a feature that was seriously lacking on the $2000 Fold model.

Last feature that has been frequently mentioned in the leaks and rumors is the side-mounted fingerprint reader. Practically, this means that you will be able to unlock your phone by picking it up, conveniently even if it is locked in 90-degree mode.

Camera

Not a lot has been mentioned about the camera of the Z Flip, mostly because it was not certain whether it will have one or two cameras. But, further rumors led us to believe that Samsung will stick to the two camera setup for the next foldable smartphone, with the 12-megapixels on the backside, and a 10-megapixels selfie camera.

Galaxy Z Flip Price

The price of the first Fold smartphone was $1,980 when it was announced for the first time in February, and stayed the same for the second release in November. Even though it is often a case that the successors come with a higher price tag, the rumors for the Galaxy Fold 2 seem to put the price at around $800-850 which is much more reasonable and affordable, setting the phone among other flagships such as Samsung Note 10.

Galaxy Z Flip Release Date

When it comes to the release date, Samsung has just recently reannounced the first model, but according to the rumors, it seems that Samsung Z Flip is coming as soon as February. Some rumors say that the phone will be released at Mobile World Congress by the end of February 2020. On the other hand, other rumors say it will happen on the 11th of February alongside the upcoming Galaxy S20, right before the MWC just like it happened last year with the release of Galaxy S10. We are yet to find out which option is true, but either way, it seems like the new Fold 2 is right around the corner.
