Google Home app is getting a new Material based design

When Google first built the Google Home app it was intended to be only to set up the Chromecast, after that the app got a lot of updates, and now you can use to set up and control Google Chromecast, Google Home in its three versions, plus many supported smart home devices that are supported by Google. With this increase in functionality, and the huge amount of features and supported devices that can be added to the app, Google is planning for a major redesign of the app that will go along with Google’s latest Material Design.

A new update for Google Home app was first reported by XDA developers that would affect the sidebar in the current version of Google Home app, with the new update we will get a new toolbar at the bottom of the screen. The Home screen didn’t change in the new app, but you can notice that there is a tendency to focus more on new TV shows, movies, and music with direct links for you to discover.

Here is how the current app looks like:

A new devices option has been added to the bottom toolbar, and the devices page will be redesigned as well, now the devices icons look smaller than before as you can see the pictures below.

Finally, we don’t know when the new update will roll out for users, and another thing to mention, as the new update is following the Android Material design, we have no idea if the same update will be available to iOS users or not.

We hope that Google focuses more on devices control in the new app, because if you think about it, not a lot of people would open the app to check new movies and TV shows, usually we open the app to control our smart devices around the house.
