Google might be releasing new podcasting app Shortwave

It was recently found out that Google is preparing a new app that was called Shortwave that is supposed to offer some kind of different podcasting experience, more personalized and relevant. This Area 120-developed project was revealed by a former Google designer where he goes into details of the whole thing. Google spokesperson revealed to 9to5google that the details released are an early exploratory concept and does not represent the current product. But here is what it might be.

The goal behind the Shortwave app is to solve few issues people are having with the current podcasting apps, such as not having time to listen to them, or not being able to find something interesting and worth the time. It seems that we would be presented only parts of the podcast that match our preferences and are relevant. This app targets people who do not have a lot of free time to devote to the podcasts but still want to.

It is not sure how exactly the picking and “slicing” of the podcasts would work, whether it would be done by humans or perhaps artificial intelligence, which would be a step similar to what we are used to seeing by Google. The Shortwave podcasts snips would last anywhere between 1 and 10 minutes that you can choose and listen to when you catch a break.

The interface of the app was revealed as well, but definitely might not be what we see when the app gets released. It has a simple home screen that resembles the ones of Google Home app and initially shows groups that you can choose from, including Laugh, Learn and Listen- editor’s curated picks which gives an impression that only those are chosen by humans while the others might not be.

There is still no straightforward details that we can rely on for sure, but it seems that Shortwave might be part of the general plan for Google’s existing podcast app, Google Podcasts. Nevertheless, we are excited to see what Google is preparing and how would it differ from standard podcasting apps.
