HIFIMAN Introduces The R2R2000 Flagship DAP

In the current audiophile world, HIFIMAN is a rather well-known and loved manufacturer. Their planar magnetic headphones are of almost legendary status, and their RE-400 IEMs is an astonishingly good set for budget-minded folks. They’ve also created a fair number of high-end DAPs, such as the MegaMini, HM650, HM700, and HM901s, to name just a few. Recently they introduced their latest flagship DAP – the R2R2000

Meet the R2R2000

One thing that most people can agree on is that HIFIMAN’s products (especially their DAPs), have some rather quirky designs. In the case of the R2R2000, the design team still managed to make it look quirky, but with a few more modern touches included too. It would be interesting to see how ergonomic the R2R2000 feels in the hand.
In terms of dimensions, the aluminium-alloy body measures in at 56mm wide and 97.4mm tall. However, it does not have a uniform thickness, which measures 18.37mm at the thickest part, and 12.66mm at the thinnest end.

Thus far it seems the R2R2000 will use the exact same PCM1704U-K DAC chip found in their discontinued HM801. It also seems that the PCM1704U-K has been discontinued, and HIFIMAN owns the absolute last batch ever made of this chip. This might turn out to be a bit problematic, as in the event that an R2R2000’s DAC chip needs to be replaced (for whatever reason), they might run out of replacement parts. But who knows, perhaps HIFIMAN have way more of the chips in stock than what they’ll actually ever need.

Interestingly, HIFIMAN have incorporated both a single-ended 3.5mm port, as well as a 4.4mm balanced port, capable of outputting nearly 400mW of power.

Unfortunately there does not seem to be any sort of fast charging functionality, but the 1800mAh battery should be good for up to 8 hours of playback, and around 40-50 hours in energy-saving mode (probably some kind of standby).

Pricing & Availability

The R2R2000 is set to be shipped in the Spring of 2018, and there seems to be 2 combo offers available. The first is for the R2R2000 and a set of RE-800 IEMs at an asking price of around $2455, whilst the second is for the R2R2000 and a set or RE-2000 IEMs for around $3230.
