JH Audio Lola – new Hybrid Custom In-Ear Monitor

JH Audio’s new hybrid IEM – JH Audio Lola

Jerry Harvey. This name is a legend. Check out his wikipedia page and read up about him. He is indeed one of there driving forces of the development of IEMs and especially custom in-ear-monitors (CIEMs). His client list reads like the who’s who of the music industry.

From AR Rahman, Madonna, U2, Wiz Khalifa, T-Pain, Miley Cirus, Nicky Minaj, Alicia Keys, AC/DC and and and – this guy is providing the best of the best with in-ears for their performances. And he does so for 25 years when he was asked by none other than Alex van Halen to look into in-ear-monitors.

During all these years Jerry Harvey has innovated, leading the industry with many products and often redefined what we now see as normal.

So if a company that carries Jerry Harvey’s name (JH AUDIO) releases a new product with a new technology – we need to pay attention as this could lead the way for many others.

The new CIEM/IEM, named LOLA, is a $1,745 US earphone (custom and $1,599 in universal version), that features a hybrid setup of 2 dynamic drivers with a 4.9mm diameter, and a array for 6 more balanced armature drivers in a 2 low and quad high configuration. So in each ear you will have 2 dynamic and 6 balanced armature drivers. We have seen plenty of in-ears before with a hybrid configuration.

Usually the dynamic drivers take care of the bass regions as they can “move air” in the lower regions much easier than BA drivers can do. A lot of people, me included, generally prefer the impact of dynamic drivers a bit over BA drivers, though in recent times the differences are getting much smaller. However the Lola uses the dual dynamic drivers for a patent pending D.O.M.E Midrange Enclosure.

Two opposing 4.9 mm drivers are creating a 9.8mm effective midrange driver in a much smaller package. The Lola also features the patented Freqphase technology, special proprietary 4-pin connectors and 15dB of user adjustable Bass response.

The Lola is a balance of power, detail and warmth. Bass is supposedly quick and extremely detailed and of course t a silky, airy midrange thanks to the new driver array.

We can’t wait to hear more about these. I like that more and more audio companies are getting into hybrid setups – they can combine the benefits of BA and dynamic drivers in a perfect package.
