Audiophiles – Meet The New HD 660 S

Sennheiser is no new-comer to the world of top-notch audio. Ask any audiophile, literally, ANY audiophile, and it’s guaranteed that they know all about Sennheiser. Heck, even people who don’t consider themselves as audiophiles would have heard of Sennheiser.

Sennheiser have produced some genuinely incredible headphones – from the exceptionally popular HD 650, to the top-of-the-line level HD 800 S.

As stated by Sennheiser in a forum post:

“Sennheiser has launched a new open dynamic headphone for the passionate audiophile – the HD 660 S. The new model builds on the legacy of the HD 650, surpassing the exceptional performance of its predecessor with a new and improved transducer design that delivers lower harmonic distortion for an even more natural, lifelike audio experience. With a lower impedance of 150 ohms, the HD 660 S offers even greater versatility, allowing listeners to enjoy the headphones’ reference-class fidelity with both stationary and mobile HiRes players.”

So, it seems as though the HD 660 S would be easier to drive. The HD 650 had an impedance of 300-ohm, whereas the HD 660 S has an impedance of 150-ohm.

Assuming that the FR test was done correctly (properly volume matched), which it seems to have been, then the HD 660 S appears to have an overall more balanced and neutral signature. This does seem to suggest that the updated model may very well become just as popular as the original HD 650, if not more so. The HD 650 was hailed for its fantastic sound characteristic and quality, so any improvements will be welcomed with open arms.

Pricing

Sennheiser has indicated that the MSRP for the HD 660 S will be $499.95. Who knows, perhaps some time in the future we might even see a Massdrop version of the HD 660 S too.
