Sony bids the PlayStation 3 farewell as production officially ends in Japan

One of the most influential devices on modern digital entertainment has reached the end of the tunnel. From now on, no new PlayStation 3 devices will be made, as Sony officially confirmed that all shipments are now over for the decade-old console.

News came from the official PlayStation website where it was said that production inside Japan has ended, meaning that a western halt is also coming few weeks from now as the console reaches the end of its support in its home country.

In comparison, Microsoft’s rival Xbox 360 had ceased production about a year ago, which should come to no one’s surprise as the two consoles had a year of age gap in favor of Xbox. PlayStation 3 itself was released later in 2006 initiating the next gen of Sony’s famous line of consoles after the successful PS2, starting the age of HD media alongside the Xbox 360 and introducing Blu Ray discs that are still used for movies and games to this day.

With the official support officially coming to an end Sony has fulfilled their promise in a 10-year cycle. You can expect that no new games will be available some months from now on the console as the full focus for developers shift entirely towards 2013’s PS4 console, which itself is nearing the end of its games support with rumors of PS5 in 2019/2020.

PS3 had three different iterations that came with improvements over one another: The original Fat model, Slim, and finally Super Slim. PS4 also has that same amount of models with Original, Slim, and recently the Pro.

Goodbye PS3… Thanks for the memories!
