Sphero Specdrums turns colors around you into music

Sphero, company that acquired Specdrums last year, is known by its robots that even include famous characters from Star Wars franchise. This year at CES 2019 they are relaunching the musical ring, originally released by Specdrums. The unusual Sphero Specdrums ring is motion enabled which allows you to turn colors around you into music by simple taps.

Sphero has used past few years to become more involved in education and use its robotics and coding for such purposes, Specdrums ring being a part of that bigger mission. Each time the ring is pressed against a surface of any colored object, it flashes and the phone app will convert that color into assigned sound. Sphero Specdrums use accelerometer and light sensor to detect taps and other gestures, as well as thousands of distinct colors, each of which will provide a unique sound. Specdrums can work with one or more rings at once, creating a combination of sounds at the same time.

The ring is accompanied by Specdrums Mix, the app made by Sphero for both iOS and Android devices. The ring is connected to the smartphone using Low Energy Bluetooth connectivity and it uses the device’s speaker to play the sound. Through the app, users can assign sounds to each color either by recording it themselves or by using many of the instrument packs available for download. The battery life is 2 hours of play time after which the ring has to be recharged using the USB port.

The Sphero Specdrums music ring is going to start shipping on January 15th, but it will not show up in retail stored before spring. The price of the kit is going to be $64.99, while the 2 ring kit option will be priced at $99.99. Each kit includes one (or two) rings, carrying bag and a play pad in different colored blocks.
