Spotify Is Testing Podcast Suggestions With Music

Spotify is always up to something new. In the past few months, the Swedish music streaming service has been investing hundreds of millions of dollars in the podcast market, acquiring many podcast companies like Gimlet, Anchor and Parcast. But we still didn’t see the results of these acquisitions yet. Apparently, Spotify is working on a new way to promote its podcast library to its users. We may have seen the first step in promoting Spotify podcasts today through a new algorithmic playlist named “Your Daily Drive”.

Spotify Your Daily Drive playlist is an algorithmic playlist that contains some curated music tracks according to the user’s taste alongside with some news podcasts. According to The Verge, the playlist appeared to their editor Dan Seifert. What’s strange was that all the podcasts in the playlist were in Portuguese, a foreign language that Dan doesn’t speak. Maybe it was just a mistake, or maybe Spotify was testing the new feature in a Portuguese-speaking country and something went wrong.

On his way back home, Dan had a new music mix in the same playlist, but all the podcasts were still in Portuguese, and he had the same episode from the morning as he explained in a second tweet.

Will we see this playlist rolling out for all users? It would be a nice way to promote Spotify’s podcast content to its 100 million subscribers. However, I expect more steps from Spotify to create the podcast hub they are aiming for.
