Google is a multinational corporation from the United States of America. It is known for creating and running one of the largest search engines on the internet. Every day more than a billion people use it. Google’s headquarters are in Mountain View, California, part of the Silicon Valley.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin started the company in 1998 while they were studying at Stanford University in California. Google developed to be the best search engine on the internet with the purpose of helping users to find relevant web pages.  

In September 2001, Google’s rating system got the US. patent with Larry Page as the inventor of the system. The company continued to grow, and the company moved its offices to Mountain View, California to what right now is known as Googleplex.

The company produces a wide range of products and services. We can categorize these products and services into  five main categories: 

Advertising

Google generates most of its profit from ads. This includes ads on Google website and Youtube, Android licensing and service fees, and in-app purchases.

Web-based services

Google offers Gmail for email, Google Calendar for time-management and scheduling, Google Maps for mapping, navigation and satellite imagery, Google Drive for cloud storage of files, Google Docs, Sheets and Slides for productivity, Google Photos for photo storage and sharing, Google Keep for note-taking, Google Translate for language translation, YouTube for video viewing and sharing, Google My Business for managing public business information, and Duo for social interaction. In March 2019, Google unveiled a cloud gaming service named Stadia.

Software

Google develops Android OS for smartphones and tablets, Android Auto for cars, Wear OS for smartwatches as well as Android Things which is a software aimed to be used with Internet of Things. 

The company also develops Google Chrome web browser, which became the most popular browser in the world, as well as Chrome OS which is an operating system based on Chrome.

Hardware

In 2010, Google released its first hardware product as the Nexus One smartphone, in the following years, the company continued producing Nexus smartphones until 2016 when the bran was replaced by Pixel.

In 2011, the company released the Chromebook, which was introduced as the new type of computers running Google’s Chrome OS.

In 2013, the company introduced the Chromecast dongle, which allows users to stream content from their smartphones to their TVs.

Google Home smart speakers are another hardware product by Google, the speaker has the Google Assistant built-in, and it helps users to establish their smart home. Users can ask the assistant anything, as well as order it to turn on the lights for example, or control other home equipment. In 2019, the company rebranded Google Home speakers as Nest speakers. The Nest smart speakers come in different sizes and shapes.  

Daydream VR headset is a headset that allows Android users to use their smartphones in order to live a VR experience.

Google Wifi is a connected set of Wi-Fi routers to simplify and extend coverage of home Wi-Fi.

Enterprise services

G Suite is a monthly subscription offering for organizations and businesses to get access to a collection of Google’s services, including Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Slides, with additional administrative tools, unique domain names, and 24/7 support.
