What Is Netflix? And How Does It Work?

I think we can all agree in 2018 that the age of TV is coming to an end. Everything related to music, art, media, and even the news can be found on the internet throughout many services that deliver the content on demand. Movies and TV shows are not an exception here. More users are giving up on cable companies and signing up for streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video. In this article we will talk about Netflix, what is Netflix? How does it work? And how much does it cost?.

What Is Netflix?

Netflix is a US entertainment company founded by Reed Hastings and Mark Randolph on August 29, 1997, in California. Initially, the company relied on the sale and rental of DVDs and delivery by mail and then evolved to provide its streaming service for movies and TV shows in 2007. In 2010, the company expanded internationally, and right now Netflix is available in more than 190 countries around the world.

Netflix didn’t stop here, in 2012, the company entered the world of production and started producing many movies and series all over the world to create its own original content or what we know right now as Netflix Originals. one of the first series that Netflix made was the famous American version of House Of Cards. Netflix invested a lot of money in producing Netflix Originals to the point that in 2016 only, the company had more than 126 Netflix Originals.

A new concept in the world of TV shows was created by Netflix, which is “Binge Watching” meaning that you can watch as many episodes as you want in one session, without needing to wait another week for the new episode to come out.

Netflix is now an online video streaming service that enables its users to watch movies, series, documentaries and other shows without commercials through a monthly subscription that differs from one country to another. According to the latest statistics, Netflix has more than 137 million users worldwide, with users collectively spending more than 100 billion hours watching movies and series on Netflix monthly.

Netflix Prices

To sign up for the service, Netflix offers three membership plans. The differences between these three are the number of users allowed to use the account at the same time, as well as the quality of streaming whether it is a standard resolution “SD”, high resolution “HD”, or “Ultra HD”. The prices of these three plans are as follows:

  • Basic plan: lets you stream TV shows and movies from Netflix on one device at a time in standard definition (SD).
  • Standard plan: lets you stream TV shows and movies from Netflix on two devices at the same time and in high definition (HD) when available.
  • Premium plan: lets you stream TV shows and movies from Netflix on four devices at the same time and in high definition (HD) and ultra high definition (UHD) when available.

In case you are not sure whether you want to sign up for Netflix or not, or you just want to try it, then the company offers you one-month free trial. Of course, you have to enter your credit card details, but as long as you cancel your subscription before the end of the month, you won’t lose any money.
