Audio-Technica Adds To Their SonicSport Lineup
CES 2018 was quite a busy show for Audio-Technica. Not only did they introduce a couple of new full-sized headphones and other audio-related products, but they’ve expanded their SonicSport lineup too. Offering wireless solutions seems to have been a big hit this year, and both of these new SonicSport models feature Bluetooth wireless technology.
ATH-SPORT50BT
The design of the ATH-SPORT50BT is somehwat similar to sport-orientated offerings that we’ve seen from the likes of Beats. the earhook design should ensure a secure yet comfortable fit during exercise routines. Whilst it isn’t exactly waterproof, the IP5X rating does mean that the ATH-SPORT50BT should be perfectly OK for sweaty activities (but definitely not swimming) and can be washed under running water.
Spec-wise the ATH-SPORT50BT houses a single 9mm driver in each earpiece, capable of reproducing frequencies between 20 and 20kHz. The internal battery takes roughly 3 hours to charge, and can provide continuous music playback for up to 6 hours. There’s also a microphone on board for making calls.
An MSRP for the ATH-SPORT50BT has been posted on the product page suggesting a price of $69.
The ATH-SPORT70BT features a near identical design and spec-sheet to that of the ATH-SPORT50BT, but it does add an “ambient noise hear-through function” which allows you to hear people and traffic around you for safer use outdoors. Basically, it’s similar in functionality to the Ambient Sound mode that you get on the Sony WF-1000X.
However, one immediate con to both of these new SonicSport models (despite both models featuring Bluetooth 4.1 technology) is that neither of them offer support for any of the Apt-X formats, although the ATH-SPORT70BT does at least support the AAC format. this will unfortunately be a deal-breaker for many prospective buyers.
The MSRP for the ATH-SPORT70BT seems to be at the $129 mark according to the product page.
