Audio-Technica Finally Unveils The M60x

Audio-Technica have given the audiophile world quite a number of headphones and other products over the years. Their M50x is quite possibly their most popular model, and is often featured on various lists found online with regards to something along the lines of “best value headphones” or “affordable studio monitor headphones”. However, the M50x has been around for what feels like ages, and they’ve already got an M70x. Thankfully, the time has finally come, and AT is finally ready to lift the covers off of the newest addition to the ATH-line – the M60x.

Meet the M60x

Comparing just the design to the headphone to that of its siblings, it seems that Audio-Technica are stepping slightly into a different direction this time round. Whilst the construction seems to be entirely or at the very least predominantly of plastic (much like the M50x), the design of the headband adjustment system looks quite different to previous models.

For the M70x, M50x, M40x, M30x, and even the M20x, the headband adjustment mechanism was built into the actual headband, meaning that it would be retracted from within the headband. This time round, though, this mechanism seems to be situated on the outside of the headband.

Spec-wise the driver of the M60x seems to be either a new design, or a reworked version of the 45mm driver found in the M50x.
Frequency response range has remained the same at 15-28kHz, and the impedance too has remained the same 38-ohm, whilst the sensitivity has been improved from 99dB/mW to 102dB/mW. That means that the M60x should be a little easier to drive (requiring less power) than the M50x.
One other characteristic that has undergone a pretty big change is the weight, as the M60x weighs around 30% less than the M50x (200g vs 285g).

Availability

Official availability does not seem clear yet, although an MSRP of $199 has been announced.
