First details revealed for Atari’s first console in 20 years, Ataribox

It’s rectangular, classic-looking, and has a wooden front-view. Here’s our first look at Ataribox, the newest console from the prestigious Atari company often described as the grandfather of modern consoles. Will this new device bring back the glories of the past or is it better left off dead?

We were teased for the company’s first console in 20 years during E3 week this year with the release of a mysterious website showing a single trailer, promising a new Atari product by the name of “Ataribox”. Since then many speculations thought we would be seeing something similar to what Nintendo has been doing with NES and SNES classic editions, and in some way, it appears that’s actually true to an extent.

It appears that Atari is back in hardware business after spending long years in the shadows facing bankruptcies and publishing small titles here and there, but it won’t do it all by itself. Sources say that Ataribox is going the Crowdfunding route with a Kickstarter that will be launched allowing fans of the company to contribute in its making.

As for the official details themselves, we now know a bit more about the console aside from its looks. Ataribox is said to be able to run Atari classics as well as “current content”. What that content might be is still to be seen, and it could be anywhere from mobile games on TV to PS4 and Xbox One level of games. Sadly, we will have to wait a bit more to see what the company means by that sentence.

“Our object is to create something new, that stays loyal to our heritage, by satisfying both our old and new fans” e-mail sent to Atari subscribers says. The box itself will come in two variations the first with wooden front and the other in glass, and it will support SD cards, one HDMI port and four USBs.

Price, release date and content are still to be revealed as the console is still being worked on. There will be more information in the coming weeks so stay tuned. Have a look at the new concept pictures below:
