HERO: The $199 GoPro

In an attempt to boost sales, GoPro introduced a new entry-level action camera that costs $199. The new camera, simply called Hero, looks exactly like the higher end models of the Hero lineup. The main difference between Hero and its more expensive relatives is in terms of performance.

While the Hero 5 and 6 are able to shoot 4K video and can shoot slow-motion video at 240 frames per second, the new camera is capped at a max resolution of 1440 at 60 frames per second. Aside from that, the Hero can only shoot stills at 10 megapixels, compared to the 12 megapixel photos in the higher end models. Other options are limited too. The burst mode is capped at 10 frames per second, and the time lapse mode can only shoot one shot every 0.5 seconds.

While it may seem that the Hero is a stripped down version of the higher end models, it retains many features found in the earlier models. It sports a 2-inch touchscreen and can be voice controlled. Of course, as an action camera, the Hero is waterproof (up to 30 feet) and supports digital video stabilization. For users looking to upgrade from the early GoPro models, the camera has the same shape and works with the same accessories and mounts.

The new camera comes as a move from GoPro to boost their sales, as they have been shrinking. While GoPro used to dominate the market for action cameras, Chinese competitors have been slowly stealing market shares. The increased quality of smartphone cameras and the new trend of waterproof smartphones has also affected the company’s sales. In 2014, GoPro’s shares went for $80 a share, today it’s just under $5. The company’s new low-cost camera might encourage users to upgrade from smartphone cameras to an action camera and help revive the GoPro name.

The GoPro Hero went on sale on Thursday.
