Microsoft Surface Laptop gets worst possible score for its repairability – deemed impossible to fix

If your Surface laptop wouldn’t turn on, it’d be as good as absolutely dead. Does this sound a little extreme? In fact, it is, but it’s also the reality of Microsoft’s latest product which was deemed impossible to repair by the experts at iFixit, scoring it with their lowest rating ever.

Surface Pro 1 hybrid was the first to get a 1 out of 10 when it was released back in the day in 2013. Fast forward four years and another Microsoft device somehow managed to perform worse. iFixit’s dismantle review spoke about intentions of giving the laptop a minus 1 out of 10 if it was possible, simply because it’s a “glue filled atrocity” that can’t be fixed without destroying its cover.

Surface’s fancy specs under the hood are entirely soldered to the motherboard. This means no swappable RAM, HDD or virtually anything. The limited battery is also irreplaceable without destroying the components, so good luck enjoying the laptop while its battery last.

For close to a $1k, Microsoft Surface laptop now sounds like a questionable investment knowing that you can never have it repaired hardware-wise. This will be affecting sales in a big way and if Microsoft intends to go on making more laptops it better think of other solutions to keep the design compact or there won’t be a next time.
