MWC 2020 Cancelled: Everything You Need To Know

Mobile World Congress is officially not taking place this year according to the GSM Association (GSMA) which organizes the world event every year. This news comes after many companies decided to pull out of MWC 2020 in Barcelona due to the global novel coronavirus outbreak.

Over the past few weeks, companies have been canceling their MWC and pre-MWC events this includes (Amazon, Amdocs, AT&T, BT, Cisco, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Facebook, HMD Global, Intel, LG, McAfee, MediaTek, Nokia, NTT Docomo, Nvidia, Orange, Rakuten, Royole, Sony, Sprint, Vivo, Vodafone, Western Digital). So it’s not a big shock that the GSMA decided to cancel the whole event.

GSMA CEO John Hoffman explained in a statement “With due regard to the safe and healthy environment in Barcelona and the host country today, the GSMA has cancelled MWC Barcelona 2020 because the global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak, travel concern and other circumstances, make it impossible for the GSMA to hold the event. The Host City Parties respect and understand this decision. The GSMA and the Host City Parties will continue to be working in unison and supporting each other for MWC Barcelona 2021 and future editions. Our sympathies at this time are with those affected in China, and all around the world.”

While MWC 2020 is not going to take place in Barcelona, many companies decided to go ahead with their scheduled announcements such as Sony that confirmed that the launch of its new flagship smartphone is still going ahead through a YouTube video instead of the cancelled MWC event.

Other companies such as LG and HMD Global confirmed that they will reschedule their announcements to a yet not confirmed date in the future. We can assume that this would be the case for many other companies.

MWC 2020 was supposed to take place between February 24th and the 27th, with some companies that had pre-MWC events planned. It’s unclear whether those events are cancelled as well or not. Those companies are Huawei, Oppo, Xiaomi, and Motorola, but we’ll keep you updated on that matter.
