Sennheiser Introduces HD1 Free Wireless IEM

Thus far Sennheiser’s HD1-series was comprised of the HD1 Wireless in-ear headphones, and the full-size HD1 headphones. Recently Sennheiser announced the HD1 Free, which is what Sennheiser describes is their “most compact Bluetooth headphone ever“.

Meet the HD1 Free

The HD1 Free doesn’t offer a radically new design or style of wireless IEMs, as it is based around the familiar neckband-style. It features Bluetooth 4.2 and a 3-button in-line remote which includes a high-quality in-line microphone as well. As expected from most Bluetooth-equipped device nowadays, Sennheiser states that the HD1 Free can reach maximum range of up to 10 meters (33 ft), can store up to a total of 8 devices in it’s paired-devices list, and can also be connected to up to 2 devices simultaneously.

A maximum playback time of up to 6 hours on a single charge, coupled with the a weight of less than 40g (1.4 oz), sure does make the HD1 Free seem like the light and compact solution that Sennheiser claims it to be.

In terms of sound-specs, the HD1 Free utilises the AptX, AptX Low Latency, and AAC formats, has a measured frequency response of 15-22kHz, a sensitivity of 118dB, and a low THD of <0.5%.

Given the style and shape, it’ll be in direct competition with the likes of the Beats X. The latter, though, does cost less than the HD1 Free, and offers up to 8 hours of playback. It does not, however, offer AptX compatibility.

In case you’re wondering; yes, the HD1 Free and the Momentum Free are the exact same products. For whatever reason, Sennheiser has decided to rename the Momentum Free to HD1 Free for the USA market.
