Google and Samsung are Combining Wear OS and Tizen

During its I/O 2021 developer conference on Tuesday, Google announced a new alliance between Google and Samsung. The two companies announced that they are merging Google’s Wear OS and Samsung’s Tizen OS that the company uses for all its wearables. While the new platform still doesn’t have an official name, some are calling it simply “Wear”, but that will probably change later.

This new alliance will result in many benefits for users for both companies as well as users. For example, the new OS will improve battery life on all wearables, offer better animations, as well as improve loading time for apps by 30 percent. This will also create one unified wearables OS for Android, which will make developers’ lives much easier and allow them to work on better apps.

The new “Wear” OS will feature many essential apps, but the most interesting apps will include a version of Google Maps that works without a smartphone nearby. Also, Spotify and YouTube Music will both support offline downloads on the new platform.

Samsung already confirmed that the next Galaxy Watch will run the new OS. The company promised that existing smartwatches will continue to receive up to three years of software updates. Also, since Google acquired Fitbit, upcoming Fitbit devices will also run “Wear”.
