What are the features new Apple AirPods 2 might have?

A couple of months back, we wrote about the potential devices coming in 2019 from Apple when it comes to their HomePod as well as some headphones. We also mentioned the idea about some of the features on the new Apple AirPods 2 that might come in the final version, such as water resistance and noise cancellation features. There was also the idea of increasing the range at which Apple’s earbuds would work, and maybe even an introduction of some biometric sensors. But, nothing was for certain until some things were revealed in beta version of iOS 12.

The ideas we have talked about before are still possible at some point. Even though the new AirPods might be waterproof, it’s not sure what ranking they would hold. Regarding the addition of the biometric sensors, that would significantly increase the price of the Apple AirPods 2 at the end but it is not certain yet which new generation would feature these sensors.

Original AirPods functioned on a principle of a tap. Basically, if you want to get ahold of Siri, you can just tap them in your ear and speak. What seems to be the case in the Apple AirPods 2 is the voice activation where all you need to say is the famous “Hey Siri” without physical taping.

We can be sure there will be some updates coming to the new AirPods 2 as the original version features parts that were since improved in other Apple devices. One of such parts is the Bluetooth connectivity, that is, the chip that Apple has designed where the original AirPods hold the original W1 chip. What is not certain is whether the new AirPods 2 will have the updated W2 chip that is found in the newest model of Apple Watch, or a completely new chip.

One of the updates will be the earbuds case, even though the looks don’t seem to change based on the revealed images. Besides now it will have a small dot. As many other brands that offer earbuds together with a case, they design it to be a charging case so that you can get a bit more “juice” in the headphones, and it seems that Apple is joining that trend as the dot appears to be a charging status indicator for charging and full-charge modes.

Next to this, the case would also feature wireless power receivers which would work together with a charging mat so that you can wirelessly charge the case itself. Among other speculations is also that Apple AirPods 2 might be in a way a portable media player. Like iPod just very small. It this is true, it would make the new AirPods much more workout friendly than the originals.

The patent Apple has filed for the charging case indicate that the case itself might have a built-in storage for your favorite music, and even control over music playback. On top of that, the charging port on the case would be able to play audio, probably using Apple Music. This would be quite a change from the original AirPods.

You would think that this already transformed the original AirPods into something way more developed, but there is still a few small things that would change, including the design itself. From other few patents, Apple is giving hints that there won’t be the long tail sticking out of your ears. And there are also some design ideas of ear fins making them more secure in your ears.

These design changes are not sure to be present in Apple AirPods 2 or they will be in the generation after together with the water resistance feature. But it will happen at some point. There is also more proof that biometrics sensors including accelerometer or pulse oximeter might be present as well as internal circuitry improvements.

The new Apple AirPods 2 do not have a set date but they are probably coming in September at the annual Apple event. Also, keep in mind that there might be two new generations coming, so there is a release next year to look forward to as well. From the speculations, it seems like Apple is going for a more workout earbuds kind of product that the original AirPods were, but we are yet to see how all these information fit together.
