Instead of ascending to Mars, the entire human civilization has become surrounded by demons coming from Hell. There are more enemies to fight, more weapons as well, and the battles have become more brutal. So let’s take a look at this new Doom game.

Doom Eternal Review

A great comeback for Doom

Doom Eternal was able to bring back the glory of the original Doom game, offering the players more power than they could imagine. Doom has always had simple settings, without the complexity that we can find in many other games. Simply, you are one man against an army of monsters, you will engage in a constant battle with the enemy, using the arsenal of weapons that you are equipped with. Most of us probably grew up with the original Doom game that left a special place in our hearts, you will be happy to hear that Doom Eternal will bring back those memories, and provide you with the feeling of nostalgia you were hoping to get when you purchased the game.

Perhaps what defines Doom Eternal is its speed and the intuitive gameplay. Every decision you make will affect you in the gam. But whatever decision you make, don’t stop shooting, you are definitely dead if you stop shooting. Fortunately, the game is designed to maintain progress, as you can get back to the game right where you died, without affecting the core of the game. The character Doomguy is agile, he can jump and dash in the air, climb walls, and swing on the poles. Monsters will attack from every direction, meaning you have to be ready to shoot at all times. As Doomguy, you are in a world where you can shoot anything that moves, and you should definitely do that.

Just like the 2016 Doom game, in the beginning, you will find yourself right in the middle of the storyline, after Earth has been seized by the forces of Hell. Here, you have to kill all the priests that brought those forces, with the ultimate goal of stopping this invasion. In the first mission, you will start by killing all the monsters that come your way as they are trying to protect the priests, but you will soon discover that you are in a training program. This will take a while, and you might get a bit impatient as you want to start the actual game, but this training will prove useful later on, especially for newcomers. There are plenty of new skills and techniques that you need to learn before you start the game such as the weak spots of each monster and how to kill them.

Gameplay

Using multiple weapons may be the main focus of the game, you easily notice that from the battle environment. Players can use double-jumping, lunge, wall climbing, and even use the hook fired from the super shotgun to grab and push monsters away. These skills are what made Doom Eternal as special as it is.

There are also different levels that you have to play using movement only, you may feel that you are inside a Mario game, but it added a new element to the series in general. The levels were designed excellently, as it requires you to have precise timing and paths to pass. Each level is like a puzzle that you have to solve in order to move to new areas, making the game more rational which ended up being super cool.

However, some of these puzzles are completely ridiculous, they are just too simple to solve, and feel more like game filers than actual puzzles. Perhaps they should have been more difficult to give the player a sense of accomplishment.

If Doom Eternal has one weakness, it is the constant attempts to find a suitable backstory for the game hero, something the audience will never like if it is poorly made, so it is best to stay away from it completely. Most players will likely skip the dramatic backstory of Doomguy anyway. Doom is about continuing to destroy enemies and monsters, not about developing characters or building relationships between them.

In Doom Eternal, Doomguy doesn’t deal with the story as much as the story does with it, this is a game about running and destroying, and we all know Doomguy is an unstoppable force. While there is always a backstory explaining why is Doomguy inside this facility, and the reasons why he has to fight monsters, Doomguy never seems to care. His main objective is to attack the enemy and keep pushing forward, which is what we’re used to from Doomguy.
