First Images of Hiby R3 Appear Online

Hiby music, the team responsible for different firmware flavours found on many of today’s DAPs (incl. those by Shanling and Cayin) seem to have a working demo unit of their upcoming R3 DAP.

Meet the R3

A few short months ago Hiby introduced its upcoming flagship R6 DAP. Based around a dual ES Sabre DAC chip setup, the R6 sure does seem like it could very well be an interesting and exciting device.

Some specs have been found online, but this does not seem to be from official sources, so do not take it as gospel. This post seems to reveal that the R3 will be running a single ESS9028Q2M DAC chip, and will also feature a 2.5mm balanced output. Bidirection AptX transmission seems to be on the cards too. Judging from the pictures alone, it looks like it might have a touch screen interface too, but doesn’t seem to be running Android.

Comparing its size to that of the Chord Mojo, the R3 looks to be a mini DAP, perhaps in direct competition with the likes of the Shanling M2s. The fact that the above picture actually shows that the device is connected to the Mojo suggests that the it might very well serve as an excellent transport too. Thus far the Shanling M2s has served this function really well, but if the R3 does indeed have a touch screen, it might take the crown as the king of the mini DAPs/transports.

From the pictures found online, it looks like the R3 will be available in at least 3 colour variations.

Price and release

The only mention of pricing so far is taken form the previously quoted post, which seems to peg it at around the $230 mark. The same online post (along with another that seems to have been made by Hiby directly) suggests that the expected release date is somewhere towards the end of December.
