Pioneer Introduces the Private XDP-20

Pioneer has been involved in audio for a long, loooooooong time. They’re heavily involved in the automotive audio world, as well as the personal audio world. Today, they lifted the curtain on their Private XDP-20 portable music player.

Meet the Private XDP-20

Whilst the outside of the device appears quite understated (and perhaps even a little feminine), under the hood lies quite a beast. In fact, the Private XDP-20 might actually serve as an incredible transport device too.

The Private XDP-20 is pretty much packed to the brim with all of the latest goodies and features. At the heart of it all lies a ESS ES9018C2M DAC chip, capable of handling both DSD, MQA, as well as up to 32-bit PCM files. It’s also running to amps (SABER 9601K), capable of outputting 150 mW + 150 mW (Balanced) and 75 mW + 75 mW (Unbalanced) .
There’s Bluetooth (SBC only, no AptX) and both 2.4GHz as well as 5GHz Wi-Fi capabilities on-board too.

Measuring in at 98.2 x 64.5 x 16.0 mm, the Private XDP-20 is a rather compact device, and interacting with the device is taken care of via a 2.4-inch capacitive touch screen.

The 1,630 mAh 3.8 V internal battery has been rated to provide continuous playback of around 15 hours (FLAC 96 kHz / 24 bit, unbalanced, Wi-Fi / Bluetooth: OFF), and the Private XDP-20 seems would be capable to output digital audio into external DACs via its microUSB port.

Thus far there have been 3 colour variants for the Private XDP-20 that have showed up on Pioneer’s site – white, pink, and navy.

The Private XDP-20 is perhaps the only mini DAP that we’ve seen so far to feature dual storage bays, making it seem like a perfect transport for your iDSD or Mojo.

Price and release

There doesn’t seem to be any mention of pricing or availability online so far, although our rough guestimate would peg it at around the $300-mark or so.
