Popular online game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is headed to smartphones

It looks like Bluehole studio’s massively popular online title, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, is headed to a totally unexpected platform. That’s right, the game is coming to mobile devices along PC and Xbox One release. Sorry, PS4 owners.

The 100 players survival game quickly became one of the most successful new IPs in a long time, achieving 20 million copies sold so far this year despite being in Early Access state and on one platform. PUBG, in case you haven’t heard of it, consists of an addicting cycle of dropping into a huge map where players pick up whatever tools and weapons they find to try and beat other players into the ever-shrinking circle until there’s one man standing.

The formula proved to be a major success, and now every company wants its own Battle Royale title including those shady mobile developers who took advantage of PlayerUnknown’s popularity. To counter that, it looks like we’re having a smart phones version of the game.

According to publisher Tencent, the giant tech group that owns League of Legends, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds mobile version is in development at TIMI Studio Group in partnership with PUBG Corp. The game is being made for the Chinese market first, and it promises a similar experience to the original game. However, the first trailer does bear few differences.

For example, there are several vehicles that aren’t (yet) a part of PUBG on PC, like the battle ships and missile-launching helicopters. Still, it’s pretty impressive to port the game to smart phones and we can’t wait to see more of it. The first trailer is below:

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is now available for PC on Steam, with full release and Xbox One version planned for the end of this year. No words on PS4 release date just yet, but we know it’s going to be a while before that happens due to Microsoft’s deal with Bluehole.
