The Sonos Roam Portable Speaker Is Officially Launched
After the major leak regarding Sonos’s new portable speaker, the company goes on with the release launching its second portable speaker. The Sonos Roam, the company’s most affordable portable speaker. This new speaker is supposed to compete with other portable speakers on the market like the JBL Flip 5 and the Boom 3. However, this is still a Sonos speaker, in addition to its portability, Sonos is packing some unique features to maximize the usage of this new speaker.
As we mentioned when the speaker got leaked, the new Roam speaker is smaller than the Sonos Move, but they do share a lot of features. Just like the Move, the Roam features both Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity. With Bluetooth 5.0, users can connect their phones and play their favorite tunes wherever they are which is the norm for any portable speaker. But the WiFi connectivity is where Sonos stands out. When at home, the Roam will connect to WiFi allowing users to use the speaker to access their streaming services like Spotify, YouTube Music, and Amazon Music. Connecting to a home network will also make voice controls available. The Roam supports Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. Users can also use the Sonos S2 app to control the speaker.

The Sonos Roam is a relatively small speaker, it weighs less than half a kilo at 430g and measures 16.8 x 6.2 x 6cm. It is also IP67 rated making it water and dust resistant. Once fully charged, it can offer up to 10 hours of music playback. It can also last up to 10 days in automatic sleep mode. While it doesn’t come with a charger, a USB-C charging cable is included in the box. The speaker is also compatible with any Qi-certified wireless charger. A wireless charging base is available for purchase separately for $49.
Another new feature is the Sonos Swap which allows users to switch to the playback to the nearest Sonos speaker around simply by long-pressing the Play/Pause button.
Unfortunately, the Roam will not be compatible to work as a surround speaker with Sonos’s soundbars like the Beam and Arc.
The Sonos Roam will be shipping on 20th April in both black and white colors. It is available for pre-order now at a price of $169 making it the cheapest Sonos speaker out there.
