The company was one of the first mobile manufacturers to produce a phone with a built-in camera.
In 1998, Nokia co-founded Symbian Ltd. in order to create a new operating system for smartphones. Symbian later created Symbian 60 which was the OS that operated most of Nokia’s smartphones.
The Finnish company managed to surpass its competitors Motorola and Ericsson by appealing to the youth market with colorful fashionable mobile phone designs.
In 2014, Nokia sold its mobile phone business to Microsoft which created Microsoft Mobile. After that, the company focused mainly on its telecommunications infrastructure business and on Internet of Things technologies.
The company got back into the smartphone business by releasing the Nokia X smartphone that runs Android OS. Now, the Finnish tech giant is competing with other smartphone companies with high-quality smartphones.
As of 2018, Nokia is the world’s third-largest network equipment manufacturer.
