Threads app is new messaging companion to Instagram

According to The Verge, Facebook is preparing a new messaging app that is expected to directly compete with Snapchat. Expected to be mean to share intimate moments with your closest friends, the new Threads app is going to be a companion app to Instagram. It will allow users to share text, photos, and video with their friends, as well as their location, speed, and even battery life, also relying on creative tools currently available in Instagram app.

Looking back to the beginning of this year, Instagram stopped its work on the messaging app Direct as users weren’t really happy about having to switch between Instagram and Direct whenever they wanted to send a message. Since then, they have been working on creating a new app that is going to put the emphasis on interactions between close friends, specifically focusing on taking a part of the Snapchat fans for their closest rival.

According to the photos posted by the Verge, those who are in your Close Friends list on Instagram will have the ability to see real-time information about you in Threads app including the above-mentioned speed, location and more. Statuses can be updated either automatically where the app will regularly update the info about you, but you can also update it manually. Nevertheless, the focus of the app is mostly messaging but it brings a quite similar interface as the current messaging option that is a part of Instagram. This means that you can see which friends are active at the moment, their stories and even send photos or videos to any of them.

The Threads app is currently in the testing phase internally at Facebook. It is not known when the app is going to be released, but we will keep you updated in the near future.
