Apple over the ear headphones might have reversible ear cups

While anticipating the release of the Apple AirPods 2, there are a few leaks on what might be the features of the upcoming Apple over the ear headphones. The newest patent application by Apple, suggests that the new headphones will use the beamforming technology that is already seen in Apple’s HomePod speaker.

The beamforming technology serves to adjust the sound based on the shape of the room and also allow Siri commands to be heard even when the speaker is playing music at a very high volume, but it will have a bit different purpose on the headphones. Firstly, the headphones would be reversible meaning that left cup can go on both left or right ear as the headphones would automatically recognize the orientation and adjust the audio output accordingly.

It is known from the patent that each ear cup will have 5 specifically located microphones which will additionally be used for the orientation purpose as the headphones will detect which microphone is closer to mouth and therefore how are they set on the head. Besides this, the microphones might also be used to separate the user’s voice from the surrounding noise during phone calls.

The name or release date for Apple over the ear headphones is still unknown, but the new Airpods are expected to hit the market soon, maybe even as soon as next year.
