Just like expected, Apple iOS 13 was released on the stage of Apple WWDC 2019 conference, Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering gave us a first look at the new iOS. Many improvements and changes are coming to the iOS including the long-awaited Dark Mode. So let’s dig into it!!

Dark Mode

Finally, iOS users will be able to enjoy a full system-wide dark mode on their iPhones. All Apple’s apps will be supported as well as the notifications and the dock.

Although many Android devices had the dark mode for a while now. The dark mode on iOS is probably the biggest visual change that Apple has introduced to iOS since the release of iOS 7 which marked the release of the current software design.

Performance

The fact that new iOSs have resulted in slower performance on older devices is not new. But it looks like Apple has learned from the past mistakes and they are promising much better performance with the new iOS 13 even on older devices.

The improvements on performance include things like 30 percent faster Face ID unlock, and twice as fast apps launch among other things.

Swiping Keyboard

Yes, Apple is finally updating its default keyboard to support swiping. Third-party keyboards are available on iOS for a long time now, but now Apple is catching up with other keyboards like Swype, and Gboard. Apple is calling the new keyboard “Quick Path” keyboard.

Although this isn’t a huge update I’m sure many iPhone users were waiting for such an update for years.

New Reminders App

ِApple is introducing a whole new redesign for the Reminders app on iOS 13. There are many changes in the app including a whole new visual interface and filtering options that include “Today”, “Scheduled,” “Flagged,” and “All” to organize tasks.

Apple is integrating AI in the new Reminders app, now you can type your reminder and the app will suggest the time for that reminder, you will also be able to tag contacts and you will be reminded every time you open their thread in Messages.

Updates to Apple Apps

Apple iOS 13 is also bringing a bunch of new updates for Apple’s core Apps. Apple Mail is getting a new desktop formating, Safari is getting new per-website preferences, and just like Google Keep, Notes is getting a new gallery view for looking at all your notes at once.

The Apple app that is getting the major update with the iOS 13 is Apple Maps. Apple is redoing the whole Apple Maps app. According to Apple, the new Maps will be built on a more comprehensive map data. Apple is also introducing a new mode to Maps which is so similar to Google Street View.

The new Apple Maps app will be available for the whole US by the end of 2019, and for selected countries and cities by 2020.

Privacy On iOS 13

Apple is famous for users’ privacy, so it was no surprise that privacy was a big part of Apple iOS 13 announcement. For starter, you can give your location to an app “Just Once” in case you don’t want that app to be able to use your location data whenever you are using it.

Apple also introduced a new feature called “Sign in with Apple” which will allow developers to log into apps and services without revealing any personal information. Users will be able to log in to their Face ID and create a new account for a specific app or service to make their personal information more secure.

Apple iOS 13 will be able to automatically create new, private email addresses for selected apps, those new email addresses will forward emails to your real email, therefore preventing apps and service from getting access to your email and spamming it.

To be honest, all three privacy updates sounds fantastic, and it will create a safer user experience for everyone.

iMessage Profile Pictures

Apple iOS 13 will come with an update for the iMessage app, users will be able to use a profile picture and share it with all their contacts on iMessage. In other words, iMessage will be just like WhatsApp or Messenger, or any other messaging app where you share your name and photo with all your contacts.

Finally, you will also be able to use those stickers as emojis in other apps such as WeChat.

New Photos and Videos Tools

As part of the new iOS 13, Apple is adding a new editing interface for photos, and surprisingly videos as well. According to Apple, users will finally be able to rotate videos right on their iPhones, as well as edit brilliance, highlights, shadows, contrast, saturation, white balance, sharpness, definition, vignette, and noise reduction for photos and videos using the new editing tools.

Apple Photos app is also getting a whole new UI, with machine learning integration that will automatically remove duplicated photos.
