Apple WWDC 2019: Everything to know about iPadOS

As expected, Apple WWDC 2019 covered iOS, watchOS and tvOS but is bringing a big surprise to all iPad users with the introduction of the new iPadOS. Over the time, iOS was being more adjusted for multitasking that was mostly intended for iPad users, while now all of that becomes easier through the new OS which is created to compliment the use of a larger screen of tablets. Unfortunately, Apple did not announce the release date of the iPadOS yet.

The first feature considered of the iPadOS is the new home screen that contains pinned expandable widgets together with the app icons, instead of keeping them in the Notification Centre like it was the case with iOS. The multitasking features are also made convenient through the Split View side slider that opens up the second app while keeping the first one still open full screen. The apps such as Notes or Messages can be easily switched based on the need at the moment.

Enhancements will come to Files app that very much resembles the Finder column of the macOS. The information pane allowing modification of the files. The files can now be shared in folders using iCloud Drive. Moreover, USB drives and SD cards are supported in the app allowing users to simply plug it in the iPad and get access to all the files available. The Quick Actions such as mark up, rotate and create a PDF, as well as zip and unzip feature will make iPad even more convenient to use. Photos can now be imported directly into photo editing apps instead of using Photos app like it was the case before.

Further updates include those to Safari making it a desktop-class browser that perfectly fits the display and is optimized for touch. It comes with its own download manager as well as all 30 new keyboard shortcuts and easier tab control. Moreover, text managing in iPadOS such as selection, editing, copying, and pasting is all done by tap and triple finger gesture on the screen, without the need for the famous shaking of the iPad for undo. The keyboard can be minimized using a pinch, making it more convenient to use.

Apple Pencil is also getting a latency drop from 20 ms to 9ms. The standard Apple Pencil tool palette is also being updated with quicker access to the tools, color palettes, shapes, eraser, and a ruler. It is also accessible for use by third-party apps. The tool palette can now be placed anywhere on the screen with a simple swipe.

Another gesture is added to the iPadOS allowing the users to create a screenshot by dragging the Pencil from the corner. Some apps also support a “full-page capture” that allows users to capture the whole website instead of just what is visible on the screen at the moment.

Of course, iPadOS is still going to have some of the most important features of the iOS for the best experience including dark-mode, new Messages features with MeMoji, Reminders app update and other iOS updates announced today at Apple WWDC 2019. This also includes the Custom Fonts that can be installed from the App Store and used across the OS, originating from collaborations with Abode, DynaComware, Monotype, Morisawa, and Founder.
