Facebook Voice Assistant Coming To Company’s VR Headsets

Years ago, Facebook attempted for the first time to create its own AI assistant for the messaging app Messenger. Even though “M” was discontinued in January 2018, the company did not give up on the idea and right away continued working on creating a new one. Today, they have confirmed they are working on a new artificial intelligence voice assistant. The Facebook voice assistant will be found on platforms which are based on hands-free interactions and help the users with quick tasks.

Based on the report given to The Verge, Facebook voice assistant is intended to be apart of the AR/VR products, among which are Portal, Oculus and anything else the company releases in the future. The internal name, based on the project’s director’s LinkedIn page, is Facebook Assistant but the final name will be announced at launch.

It is seemingly being developed by two divisions within Facebook at the same time, the AR/VR hardware and Facebook Reality Labs division. Facebook voice assistant won’t be a true competitor to Alexa or Google Assistant but rather exclusive to Facebook’s collection of hardware products. Unfortunately, the spokesperson did not reveal when exactly the official release date will be of Facebook’s new AI voice assistant.
