Google Search AR feature shows animals in your room

Google I/O conference this year brought a big promise from the company to add AR features to its search engine, and it is finally here. Google Search AR feature is going to give users an option to search for animals and see them through augmented reality.

The idea behind it goes along with Google’s belief that people would learn and understand new information better if they see it besides just reading about it. Seeing a wild animal such as an alligator or a tiger in front of you in the middle of your living room can give users an idea about the animal’s size and details. When searching for an animal, “View in 3D” button will appear next to the Knowledge Panel if the animal is available in AR, which will open a 3D version of it. Furthermore, if users wish to see it next to them, there is a “View in your space” button.

After pointing the camera at the ground, the animal will appear in the spot. The interface resembles the one of Google Lens, allowing users to move the animals around, zoom in and interact with it. To make the experience even more realistic, each creature produces sound effects while it is being observed.

  • Lion
  • Tiger
  • Bear

Google Search AR is only getting started as more things will be added. Based on Google’s partnership with NASA, New Balance, Samsung, Target, Visible Body, Volvo, Wayfair, and others, we can conclude that Google might add AR to your shopping experience, or even as a study tool of human anatomy.
