Lufthansa uses VR to create “glass bottom” plane

During the tourism trade-show ITB (the worlds leading travel trade show) in Berlin, Lufthansa presented a VR app allowing users to virtually look through a “glass bottom” out of the plane.

New tech: VR apps in planes from Lufthansa

The developer 3spin showed the app “VR Moving Map” using a Samsung Gear VR set consisting of a smartphone and the glasses. Users enjoy a 360 degree view of the landscape the plane is flying over at that very moment, enriched with images and also videos of the interesting sights along the flight path.

To ensure a really immersive VR experience, a captivating soundscape is as important as crisp and fast visuals. Check out these bluetooth in-ears to keep things wire- and tangle free during your VR sessions:

You can experience the demo right now during the show in Berlin. Lufthansa chose the flight from Frankfurt to Dubai to showcase their new technology. It allows users without window-seats to explore the surroundings as well as exploring them during bad weather when you otherwise wouldn’t see much from your window. It’s a nice way to spend your time during otherwise boring flights and when you already have seen every movie in the in-flight entertainment system.

Instead of watching a static image on your in-fligh entertainment system, you can explore virtually looking all around you. Another feature is to look pilots over their shoulders and see what they would see form the cockpit. The data for this system is streamed via wifi from the planes entertainment system to the users mobile phone.

Lufthansa and 3spin did not disclose if and when this system will be available to passengers.
