Microsoft officially shuts down Groove Music, offers smooth transition to Spotify

Groove Music services may not have been exactly popular between music listeners, and this may be in part of the immense popularity of competitors like Spotify and Tidal. Whatever the case may be, the outcome is that Microsoft is finally pulling the plug on their music services in just few months from now.

If you were one of the Groove Music app users or Groove Music Pass subscribers, you’ll be sad to hear that the company is removing all services including purchasing, listening to playlists, or even downloading by the end of this year. Instead, a partnership with Spotify was revealed so Groove users can make a smooth transition to the world’s biggest music streaming service.

In the official blog post regarding the situation, Microsoft mentioned that users will be able to transfer what they had to a brand new Spotify (or an existing) account. You will need to have the latest Groove Music version installed to go in a step-by-step process to end up with a Spotify account with all of your playlists and songs.

The good news about these otherwise bad news is that Microsoft will be giving eligable Groove Music users 60 free days of Spotify Premium in case they never had an account before. Music Pass subscribers will also net themselves a %120 refund in the form of Microsoft gift card in case their subscription extends past the deadline of December 31 2017 of the service shutdown.

If you used to use Groove Music on your Xbox One the same will apply to you regarding the transition, as Spotify app also exists on the store to download and play your playlists while you play games.
