Money Heist Season 3 Ending Explained, The Escape Plan?

Finally, Money Heist or La Casa de Papel season 3 was released on Netflix on July 19 after two long years of waiting, and as expected it was good as the first two seasons. The new season showed us the gang as they reunited to do yet another big heist. This time, they want to rob the Bank of Spain and steal 90 tons of solid gold bars by melting them into small grains. At the same time, the gang wants to get Rio back, as he was captured by the authorities. After episodes into the professor’s -almost perfect- plan, the season finale episode ended and left us with a lot of questions. I think it’s fair to assume that there will be a season 4 even though it’s not official yet. In this article, we will discuss the end of the third season 3 of Money Heist. So if you didn’t watch the new season yet then you better stop here, because, spoilers ahead

Money Heist Season 3 – Quick Recap

Before we go into the season finale, let’s recap the whole season quickly. First, the season takes us into three different timelines. The first three years before the heist, with the Professor, his brother Berlin, and Palermo, an old friend of Berlin. We also meet Berlin’s girlfriend who he told her about his plan to rob the Bank of Spain, we can expect to see her in the next season as she has information that can help the police capture everyone, or maybe she will help the gang out as she is a skilled thief herself. The second timeline is 3 weeks before the robbery while the old gang plus the new members are planning the heist. The last one is the present, which is the time of the robbery.  The season starts with Rio being captured, and then the gang reunites and agrees to rob the Bank of Spain in order to get Rio back.

After creating chaos in Madrid by dropping millions of euros in the streets, the gang enters the Bank, takes over the security, and keep the hostages just like what happened in the Royal Mint of Spain in the first season. At the same time, the Professor and Lisbon were in a van running from the police while communicating with the gang inside and negotiating the terms of Rio’s return with the ruthless police negotiator Alicia Sierra.

Having not enough time to prepare for such huge robbery, the Professor’s plan to trick the police was for him and Lisbon to hide on trees in a forest. But Lisbon’s climbing gear breaks down and she had to run away and hide in a chicken coop.

If you watched the series then you know that all this happened before the start of episode 8. In the next few paragraphs there a full recap of season 3 finale with an attempt to answer all your questions.

Money Heist Season 3 Finale

Episode finale starts with Lisbon who is hiding in a chicken coop in one of the farms. While talking to the Professor who is hiding on a tree in the forest, he finally confesses his love for her over the radio. “I’m sorry, Raquel. I’m very sorry. I really am. Look, I’m quite old and you’re my first love. I don’t know how to do this. I don’t know how to talk. I just know that I need you in my life. I’ve held on to everything you’ve taught me… Raquel, everything is better because you are with me. Because I’m in love!” the Professor said.

Right after she finished talking with the Professor, Lisbon got discovered by a couple of farmers who own the place, she tries to negotiate with them by offering them 20 million euros just for them not to blow up her cover.

In the meantime, The Professor tells Palermo to start the Alcatraz Plan where they make the police think that they are escaping from the bank by inserting a GPS chip on Marsella’s ferret, Sofia. The police fall in the trap and run to catch the “escaping criminals” until they realize that they were chasing a ferret.

Although the Alcatraz Plan work out, and the police were distracted for a little while, Alicia sees the plan as an attempt from the professor to distract the police because the gang is struggling inside, so she decides to attack them by going after one of the most important members of the group, Nairobi.

Alicia uses Nairobi’s criminal record to figure out that Nairobi has a son, and she can use that against her. We see Alicia walking out in front of the bank with a blue teddy bear, she puts it in front of the gate as a signal to attract Nairobi. We see Nairobi explaining to Tokyo that she used this teddy bear to store drugs and sell it using her son as a cover.

Alicia then brings Nairobi’s son, Axel outside for Nairobi to see him, but what Nairobi didn’t know is that Alicia had decided to kill her the moment she looks out of the window by giving the order to one of the snipers surrounding the bank.

Now, the gang is busy trying to help Nairobi after she got shot in the chest (the shot seems deadly), but the police take this as an opportunity to attack the bank using a tank.

In the meantime, we go back to Lisbon, where she is still negotiating with the farmers, but suddenly the police arrive at the farm, and the wife goes outside shouting that they have Lisbon inside and she is talking to the professor. Now the professor is listening to Suarez, the police captain while he is capturing his former colleague. He asks her over the radio to tell the police that he is coming towards her, but she refuses to reveal his location.

The professor listens to a gunshot over the radio believing that Suarez has killed Lisbon and he is in total shock. After a few moments, he gets with Palermo on the radio and breaks one of his rules which is “not to kill anyone”. “This isn’t a robbery or a challenge to the system. This is war. Act accordingly,” the professor tells Palermo.

Palermo takes this as a permission to fight the police back, especially when there is a tank heading towards the bank, he orders Rio and Tokyo to launch two RPGs at the tank bombing it completely and stopping the police attack.

After this scene, we get to know as viewers that THe Professor had fallen for one of his tricks which is “never to trust your ears”. Suarez only pretended to kill Lisbon following Alicia’s orders, and instead, he captured her under police custody. As Tokyo is narrating the series she says “That’s the card that Sierra had played to destroy us. Then, it was war.”  with that the season finale of Money Heist season 3 has ended, leaving us wondering about the fate of our favorite gang.

The Escape Plan

The third season of La Casa de Papel left us with one big unanswered question. What did The Professor prepare as an escape plan?. If we go back to the first two seasons, the plan to rob the Royal Mint of Spain was somehow clear since the beginning. While the gang was printing the money, they were also digging an escape tunnel that leads to the Professor’s warehouse and by the time the police decided to attack the Mint, the Tunnel was over and they could escape through it.

In the third season, we see part of the gang taking care of the hostages, the other part breaking into the safe, taking the gold out, and then melting it. But no one is working on an escape plan.

Now here, I have two theories. The first one is that the escape plan starts with melting the gold. After melting the gold into small grains, it is now easier to take it out of the bank through the sewerage. They only have to slide it through the pipes and collect it on the other side. And then it’s much easier for the gang to negotiate an escape plan with the police in exchange for not revealing the government’s top secrets and of course, the hostages as well. But my theory here is based on the 2007 movie “Flawless” by Michael Radford. So would the writers copy that from the movie?

The second theory is a very long shot and it’s really pessimistic. So far it looks like the thieves are in big trouble, The Professor had already broken a rule, and some police soldiers got killed which might get the public angry. At the same time, the police now have Lisbon, and Nairobi is presumably dead. Another thing is that if we compare the two robberies. In the first one, the gang didn’t steal anything, they just printed their own money which was a challenge to the system. But right now they are trying to steal all the gold from The Bank of Spain which will have severe consequences on the Spanish and European economy. So let’s take a step back, and think for a moment. The Professor’s plan might fail! In fact, he wasn’t that confident that the plan will work out because they needed more time. But again, this is a really long shot, and there’s a really low chance that the writers will disappoint the audience this much.

Right now all we can do is to sit and wait for season four of this Spanish masterpiece. What did you think about the third season? Do you have any more theories on the escape plan? Share it with us in the comments.

  1. Don’t have a theory on the plan, but
I think Nairobi will survive the bullet, as
they have time since the attack has
    been stopped. (hopeful thinking maybe)
I’m wondering how many rpg’s and
other heavy weapons they have for
any other heavy attacks if it goes into full warfare,
which I really don’t think is that likely though.
We’ve seen so many hopeless situations
that have been masterfully turned around.
One thing for sure … Season #4 will be a doozy!
