Pixel 4a Release Date, Design & Specs Rumors [UPDATED]

Following Pixel 4 released by the end of October 2019, Google is preparing its next mid-range smartphone Pixel 4a. As it is the case with any new smartphone from the leading companies in the market, we got to see numerous leaks and rumors about the device, its design and the features it will bring, as well as the potential price. This is everything you need to know about Google Pixel 4a before the official release, including a potential render of the final design.

Pixel 4a Specs

Rumors from several sides have almost certainly confirmed that the codename of the device is “Sunfish”. The most important detail to mention is that there are going to be two models released: 4a and 4a XL, following last year’s trend. Considering it is going to be a mid-range model, most of the features are going to be very similar to Pixel 4, but we can expect some to be weaker justifying the price balance. Based on the latest rumors, Pixel 4a is going to have a Snapdragon 730 processor, combined with a 6GB of RAM as well as 64GB of internal storage. The problem some might encounter is that the storage will not be expandable. Other than this, it is highly unlikely that we will see some high-end features such as 5G, but Google still might include a few for its users.

Camera

Based on the renders, we know that the back camera setup is going to have a bumpy square housing, featuring a flash and perhaps a microphone. Hopefully, Google will repeat last year’s move and add a flagship camera setup to the mid-range models as well. What is almost certain is the punch-hole front camera lens, located in the top left corner of the display. Further details regarding the camera lens were shown in the TecnoLike Plus video, confirming that the new Pixel 4a is going to have a 12-megapixel lens. Good news is that there is a confirmation on the 4K video recording possibility with the new device.

Pixel 4a Design

Thanks to the leak from OnLeaks, we know what the upcoming Pixel 4a is going to look like. From the first look, it does seem that it is a combination of 3a and 4 models, but there are some obvious features that need to be addressed. Except from the USB-C charging port that is a standard choice for the latest Pixel models, the device is also going to feature a 3.5mm headphone jack. It is also going to have a fingerprint sensor on the backside, a feature that wasn’t present in the flagship model. Based on the TecnoLike Plus rumors and the leaked hand-on video, we got to see what the device would look like briefly. One detail that could be noticed is the thinker outline which comes as a surprise as initial rumors hinted that it will have a thin-bezel display. Furthermore, we also found out that it will have a 5.8-inch FDH+ display with a 60Hz refresh rate, contrary to the 90Hz refresh rate found in the flagship model.

Quickly talking about the color choices, we are almost certain that the new mid-range Pixel is going to have a Black and a White model. As it is the case with other generations, there is going to be another color model, most likely only one for 4a. Referring to Pixel 3 which had lighter, more pastel colors Mild Mint and Dubious Pink, Pixel 3a had a similar color option with the Purple-ish model. As Pixel 4 has Oh So Orange, there is a chance the color of 4a won’t be as light pastels as the previous model. There are also some rumors that the option is a some kind of blue hue color.

Pixel 4a Render

LetsGoDigital has revealed its own version of the Pixel 4a design based on the rumors collected in the past few months. The latest render shown in February is very similar to that seen from OnLeaks in January: square single-lens camera housing in the left corner in the back with the fingerprint reader just below, while the front camera lens takes place in the punch-hole design on the top left corner. Unfortunately, this render does not reveal any more clarification regarding color options.

Pixel 4a Release date

Even though it is still not officially announced, the release date is most likely going to take place at Google’s annual conference Google I/O 2020 that will be set for May or June. The reason behind the speculation follows last year’s patterns as Pixel 3a and 3a XL were revealed at Google I/O 2019 as well. This period also marks the middle of the product cycle of Pixel 4, before the release of the next flagship in Autumn 2020.

Pixel 4a Price

When it comes to the price, there is no official leaks that we can rely on yet. But, as 9to5Google reported, there are some predictions that Google Pixel 4a is going to be priced at around $400. The XL model it will be accompanied by is rumored to be priced at around $500. Nevertheless, it is not certain enough to say the price range of the devices as the release date is quite far from now and it might not even be finalized by Google yet.
