Samsung Galaxy S20 Specs & Release Date Rumors [UPDATED]

At the very beginning of 2019, in February, Samsung revealed the two latest additions to its S range of smartphones: S10 and S10e. As the new year is slowly approaching, we are receiving more details from rumors and leaks regarding what features we can see in the upcoming generation, so here is everything you need to know so far about the new Samsung Galaxy S20 range.

Samsung Galaxy S20

Since the first leaks of the new Samsung Galaxy S20, a lot of things have changed so we are going to cover the latest leaks that show what the device is expected to look like. The camera was the most prominent difference between the latest Galaxy S versions, and has already changed twice according to leaks. Even if these leaks are not completely accurate representation of what is coming in February as the company can still tweak certain details before the official release date, they still show the general idea of what S20 is going to be like.

Specs

Based on the rumors, there will most likely be three distinct sizes, including a Samsung Galaxy S20Plus and S20 Ultra. When it comes to other internals for the basic S20 model, you can count on Exynos 990 processor, and at least 128GB internal storage. The phone will feature OneUI 2.0 with a 120Hz refresh rate that was recently announced as a collaboration with OnePlus. The display would, of course, be Dynamic AMOLED with 6.2 inches.

Camera

Details about the camera of the Galaxy S20 are still unclear as the focus was mostly put on the S20 Ultra, but it is expected to have a square housing on the top left corner of the device with 3 lenses and a flash. These would include a 12-megapixels primary lens, 64-megapixel telephoto, and 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens. When it comes to the front camera setup, Samsung stuck to the punch-hole design but decided to switch the position from the top left corner to the center of the display as it is more natural for users to take selfies or make video calls.

Quick Take Feature

According to Max Weinback’s tweet, Samsung is going to add a new feature to the S20 camera. Called Quick Take, it allows you to take multiple shots at once using different cameras. This means that you will probably be able to choose the lenses you wish to use for a shot, take the shot and then pick which photo you like the best afterward. The quick Shot feature would make taking photos a bit easier without having to commit to only one lens per shot.

Design

Talking about the front side, the 6.2 inches display seems to go back to the curvy design of a couple of generations ago, with minimal bezels on the top and bottom, just enough for the earpiece. When it comes to the rest of the design, both the power button and the volume buttons are located on the right side of the housing and it seems that a dedicated Bixby button will not be present on the new model.

The color options have also been revealed: Cosmic Black, Cosmic Grey, and Cloud Blue. It is expected that all models in the series have the same color options.

Name “Samsung Galaxy S20”

Following the pattern set by many previous generations, it was simply assumed that the upcoming Galaxy S model is going to be 11, but a known source IceUniverse revealed on Twitter that it might be in fact S20. This is not the first time companies have skipped several generations, with the potential explanation for Samsung being the year 2020 and the new “wave” of Galaxy smartphones. Despite the reliability of the sources and the fact that Huawei has already done this twice, the idea of S20 is still in the air and the name will probably be confirmed alongside the release date.

The name was further confirmed at CES 2020 according to a secret meeting between Samsung’s CEO with telecom executives. At the meeting, several phones were introduced including the new S series, named Galaxy S20. It is still unsure whether E and Plus models will be named in the same manner as last years, or the S20 will be a standard model, Plus the middle one and perhaps Ultra the highest specs configuration, but that speculation is yet to be confirmed.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus

In the previous S series, we got used to seeing the standard S model to be the middle tier device, with E and Plus as a bit lower and higher standard devices. But, with S20 that won’t be the case as the S20 model is going to be the lowest, followed by the S20 Plus and then S20 Ultra which would be the one with the highest specs and best performance. Overall according to the rumors, the Plus model is going to be almost exactly the same as the base one, with similar camera setup on both front and back, Exynos 990 processor and over 128 GB of RAM. The biggest possible differences would be the size, as this one will be 6.7-inches Dynamic AMOLED display and the battery that is expected to be around 450mAh.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

As it is the case in most new series, the Galaxy S20 series is going to have a pro version called Galaxy S20 Ultra. Featuring the largest Infinity-O AMOLED display with 6.9 inches, it is most likely going to have a 120 Hz refresh rate and is going to be larger in all dimensions than the S10+ was in 2019. There are mentions of IP68 water and dust resistance too.

OnLeaks has previously shared the renders of the upcoming flagship but, as we find out now, it was only based on the first stage of the prototype, Now, he shared on Twitter the second version in which the initial idea of a completely redesigned back camera setup is still viable. Based on the latest leaks, it is going to be located in the top left corner of the device in a rectangular housing with 4 lenses instead of 5 as it was initially predicted. With all the puzzle pieces available so far, we understand that it will include a 108-megapixel main sensor and a 5x optical zoom among the 4 lenses, alongside the periscope camera with 100x zoom support and Space Zoom.

Talking about other internals, Ultra model is expected to have support for 5G network, very fast charging, and up to 512GB  internal storage options. If the rumors are to be trusted, it is also going to have a 16GB RAM model. The latest news received about the device refers to the housing which is most probably going to be made of stainless steel.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Release Date

Based on the previous years, it can easily be noticed that Samsung often debuted its Galaxy S series smartphone by the end of February each year. Samsung Galaxy S10 was released on February 20th 2019, several days before the MWC which is why a similar date was predicted for the 2020 release as well.

That is, until IceUniverse posted on Twitter that the launch of the latest Samsung smartphone is going to take place on February 18th 2020. If it is to trust the source, the phone is going to be released alongside Galaxy Fold 2 in San Francisco, but further rumors have pushed the date to the 11th of February instead of 18th.
