Samsung is launching its first stretchable AMOLED display this year

Yes, we’ve seen flexible screens for a while now be it in LG’s press conferences or even the company’s G Flex line of smartphones. However, what Samsung is about to unveil is on a totally different level.

According to Korean news agency Yohapnews, a dynamic stretchable AMOLED display is going to be launched in Society for Information Display 2017 conference in Los Angeles, making it the first reveal ever since development started on the project years ago.

The new screen, said to be 9.1 inch in size, uses organic light-emitting diode technology to display image and it’s bendable, flexible, and stretchable for up to 12 millimeters without losing its original form or quality. Samsung sees in the new technology a fitting solution to use in many applications such as wearable screens, as well as internet of things products and cars.

“While current flexible OLED is able to be transformed in only one side, this stretchable OLED can be transformed — whether curved, bent, or rolled — in both sides, above and below,” a Samsung spokesperson said in statement.

The new technology might also be used in smartphones of course, but unlike LG’s experiment in G Flex we’re talking here about a phone with no bezels as the screen would cover all four angles from the front. However, the persistent problem preventing that from happening is that there would be blindspots for touch inputs on the four sides, something that Samsung has to work out first before going with the project.

Other details about the SID 2017 reveal include that we will be seeing a 3D 5.09 inch display similar to the Nintendo 3DS and another 1.96 inch display to be used in augmented and virtual reality applications.
