Protect your privacy with Snips smart speaker

Snips is a French startup that is working on AI and smart home technology, the first thing that came to my mind when I heard about them is that no way these new guys can compete with the tech giants in the market like Google or Amazon, but what is interesting about Snips is that they are working on their own voice assistant and smart speaker from a completely different angle. Snips has launched its own smart home set with the Snips smart assistant, so let’s check how does it work in this article.

What Snips did in the beginning was building a web platform where everyone including normal users and large enterprises can create their own smart speaker, all you have to do is to download the Snips SDK and start making your own voice assistant, you will start by choosing a name for your assistant, then choose a “wake word” that you can use it to talk to your assistant.

after that you can choose what it can do for you, what machines can it control, and a lot of other smart home details that you might need it but not find it in any other assistant, so basically it will be your custom made assistant.

The platform is completely open source, that means that you can take a look on the code of the platform or on any other voice command that has been made by someone else.

After attracting more than 5,000 developers that are working on new smart assistants from all over the world and in many languages, the young startup decided that it’s the time to enter the market with an actual product, which is a smart home set supported by their Snips smart assistant, the Snips AIR Concept.

users will be able to buy the Snips AIR Base which is the main part of the home set, and the Snips AIR Satalites which are small speakers that are connected to the AIR base and you can put them in every room, so you can reach your assistant anywhere in the house.

Now after all that you are still asking what’s new, and why is Snips smart speaker different from the other speakers in the market, and the answer for this is privacy. Yes, with Snips smart speaker you can be sure that your privacy is protected because you are not sharing your data with people in the first place.

With other smart speakers, every time you ask your smart assistant to do something for you, your voice is being recorded and saved in the company’s servers, but Snips smart assistant works completely on-device, and that gives it the ability to work offline as well.

Snips smart speaker will be provided with some basic skills to control your smart home devices, control your music, set alarms and reminders, calendars, and many others by default. And you can always add any new command or skill to your smart assistant, by either creating your own or getting a previously made skill by someone else throughout Snips platform.

Snips plan to protect the users’ privacy seems to be working so far, but the question is, will it be successful eventually? And will users give up on Google Home and Amazon Echo to use Snips and protect their privacy?.
