Spotify Video Podcasts Are Available For Some Podcasts
Spotify announced yesterday that it will start supporting video podcasts on the streaming platform. The streaming service is starting with a few shows that are available for most users on Spotify’s free or premium tier. According to the Swedish company, Spotify Video Podcasts will be available everywhere where podcasts are supported for Spotify users, on both desktop and mobile.
This new feature did not roll out to all podcasters out there, only a few chosen podcasts will be able to upload a video on Spotify, but the service will start rolling out for all podcasters soon. The shows that are starting to launch videos on Spotify are Book of Basketball 2.0, Fantasy Footballers, The Misfits Podcast, H3 Podcast, The Morning Toast, Higher Learning with Van Lathan & Rachel Lindsay, and The Rooster Teeth Podcast.
Videos will start automatically when a user presses play on a supported podcast, they will sync with audio content, but if you minimize the app or just lock your phone, the audio will continue.

This new feature is not a surprise for anyone, we knew that such a feature is coming to Spotify at some point, especially after the exclusive licensing deal that Spotify signed with Joe Rogan who hosts one of the most popular podcasts in the world, and post a video version of his podcast on YouTube. Joe Rogan will move all his content including the show on YouTube to Spotify, so the streaming service had to prepare for Rogan.
Spotify is trying to be the leading company in the market when it comes to podcasting, and this new feature will set the platform up to compete with YouTube. While most podcasters won’t make their podcasts exclusive to the platform, Spotify Video Podcasts will allow podcasters to promote Spotify not only as a platform where they can download and stream their content but also as a place where they can watch their shows. Plus, this will encourage more podcasters to start posting a video version of their podcasts.
