5 Reasons to Start Your Own Podcast

In the past few years, podcasts have been gaining more and more popularity. Many media outlets have created their own podcasts, some of them have created multiple podcasts that cover different topics. We have seen some new apps that help you to start your own podcast and assist you with the process of publishing your podcast on different audio streaming platforms online. In the past year, we have seen big streaming services like Spotify and Deezer taking more interest in the podcast industry. Spotify acquired many podcast companies such as Anchor, and Gimlet Media, plus the recent Spotify update that pushes users to discover new podcasts and listen to them. So why podcasts? What makes this type of content different than the others? Why not record a Youtube video instead? In this article, we will answer these questions by listing 5 reasons why podcasts are the best content to invest in, and why you should start your podcast as soon as possible.

1.You Can listen to a podcast at any time

If we want to define what podcasts are, the easiest way to do that would be that podcasts are audio blogs, a podcast is just like a blog post, or a Youtube video except we only listen to it, we don’t have to look at the screen in order to listen to a podcast, and that’s what makes it different than other types of online content.

Most of us spend around an hour every day just traveling, whether you are going to work, heading to the gym or going to visit a friend. It doesn’t make sense for you to start watching a Youtube video while driving, while you can easily start listening to a podcast.

In other words, podcasts allow listeners to multitask, you can listen to and learn something new without interrupting your daily life, after a while, it will become a habit of yours or a daily routine.

2.Podcasts have a different user experience

When reading a blog post, users usually skim through the content, and by that, they spend less time engaging with the content. When it comes to Youtube videos, the time spent on watching videos can differ from a video to another, depending on the length of the video that usually varies from 2-3 minutes to over 30 minutes. But with podcasts, it’s a different experience.

Users are less likely to skim through or exit a podcast because they have no incentive to do so, and most probably they are just listening away from their phone or smart speaker, therefore they encounter fewer distractions like other opened tabs, or simply other notifications.

The way ads appear in podcasts is another reason why users will spend more time listening to a podcast than engaging with any other type of content. Ads in podcasts are less distracting or disturbing than they are in a Youtube video.

Lastly, as we mentioned earlier, podcasts can fit in your day, and become one of your habits so you are less likely to exit a podcast due to other distractions, instead, you might stop a podcast for some reason, but start back right where you stopped later.

This offers podcast creators more time to interact with their audience, build their brand, and deliver their message.

3.New podcasts face less competition

Although podcasts have been gaining more and more popularity, they are still less popular enough among content creators if we want to compare them to blogs that have been around since the beginning of the century, or with Youtube videos that have been around for over a decade now.

So even if it seems that the market is swamped with podcasts when you check any streaming service, there are still far fewer podcasts than there are videos on Youtube, based on that, investing in podcasts right now seems the right thing to do if you are trying to create online content.

When you are an early bird in the market, you have a chance to compete with big media outlets if you develop the right plan. Now it’s your chance!!

4.because you don’t want to be on Youtube

Many of us have thought about starting a vlog on Youtube or starting our own Youtube channel, but speaking in front of the camera is a skill that many of us lack. Well, with podcasts you don’t have to speak in front of a camera, you just have to speak.

Podcasting will also help you to develop communication skills, if you have to speak in a podcast for over an hour or so, over the course of a few months, you will notice that the way you communicate with people in your daily life has changed.

This is yet another incentive for you to start your own podcast.

5.You can make money (if you want to!)

As you probably heard before, if you are starting a podcast, or a Youtube channel to make money, then you really shouldn’t. It shouldn’t be about money, but once you’re up and running, monetization is always an option. All content creators need financial support and it is quite normal to monetize your podcast.

One of the ways to monetize your podcast is ads, where make a deal with a company, to mention them on your podcast and receive money in return.

Another way is affiliate marketing where you can promote certain products or services for your audience and get a commission on the sales you’ve created. One important thing here is to mention that you have an affiliate relationship with those companies to your audience.

And the last way to monetize your podcast is by using Patreon. In case you haven’t heard of Patreon, it’s a tool that allows your fans to support you financially. It doesn’t have to be a lot, once you have a real fan base, $1 from each one of them will help you to continue the good work.

So what are you waiting for, you have five solid reasons on why it is a good idea to start your podcast.
