The story behind SoundCloud, and will it shut down?

We haven’t heard lately about falling of one of web’s big platforms, but we are going to read the headline saying “Goodbye SoundCloud” within 50 days.

As a response to the latest news, a Tweet published by Chance (The Rapper) -the Grammy Award winning artist who credits his early success to the site- says that he is working on the SoundCloud thing.

After that, he published another Tweet saying that he had a call with Ljung which was very fruitful, and assured that the site will not go anywhere.

The SoundCloud official Twitter account added the final words in this topic saying that the site and it’s stuff are not going anywhere.

But in this article, I’m going to show you the history of this site that we may not be able to use it within the upcoming year.

The beginning

MUNICH, GERMANY – JANUARY 23: CEO of soundcloud Alexander Ljung speaks during the Digital Life Design conference (DLD) at HVB Forum on January 23, 2012 in Munich, Germany. The Swedish Musician Alexander Ljung wanted to make a place like WordPress and Flickr but only for music and that cause of his passion in music, so he started to found SoundCloud in August of 2008 in berlin and the actor Wahlforss as a sharing music platform over the internet to allow actors and musicians to share their music clips between themselves and get previews of it with the ability of talking via conversation, which means the site was to connect the musicians.

The site has changed its approach and became a platform for sharing music between users from every place in the world.

The first time SoundCloud received fund which was 2.5 million Euro in 2009 from Daughty Hanson Technology Ventures, and within months -exactly in may- the site announced reaching one million users.

In half of 2011, The site announced reaching 5 million users which was a great move in short period, and the improvements continued besides the expansion and until the announce of 2014 end which was about reaching 175 million monthly users.

A partnership between Twitter and SoundCloud has been made in March 2013 made the last one the musician partner of Twitter on iOS and has been available for the first time over iTunes store.

Many problems surrounded the site because of the Copyrights, and it tried at January 2014 to reach an agreement with big music companies to let them share their licensed music clips.

SoundCloud was so harmful to YouTube which is owned by Google because it was the first and the most common platform to share music clips until SoundCloud showed up.

in 2016 tried Spotify the greatest competitor to SoundCloud to buy it but it abandoned the idea in December.

Speaking of awards, SoundCloud won Schroder Innovation in 2011 in European Tech Tour Awards Dinner.

Monetizing SoundCloud

SoundCloud announced in August 2014 his beginning in making the site a place to gain money by activating “On SoundCloud” program which allowed its premier partners to gain money by adding ad content in their clips besides allowing sponsoring channels and showing their ads on the phone.

Funny or Die and Comedy Central were in between the sites that partnered with SoundCloud.

In addition, they were planning to launch music streaming services through paid subscription in the future.

Planning has already begun with agreements with Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment that will allow them to select certain content to be available only to Paid Services subscribers.

The service has already been launched under the name of SoundCloud Go, which allows users to get rid of ads and listen offline for 5 dollars with naming the original tracks of the service SoundCloud Go + and this allowed users to access more than 150 million clips without ads.

Another service has been offered called SoundCloud Pro which allowed the users to upload audio tracks for more than 6 hours.

In addition to allow them to enjoy other features, such as improving music and stopping the comments. The site also added another service with more price called SoundCloud Pro Unlimited, which gave the users the permission to upload Music without time limits.

Mobile Phone Applications

SoundCloud offers two mobile applications, one of them is the traditional SoundCloud, which is used to explore, listen and share music. The other is SoundCloud Pulse, which was released to Android at first and was directed to content creators, allowing them to upload and manage their content, and to respond to their comments.

Both applications were in the main application, but were separated from each other – according to Brendan Codey – to improve the user experience, so as not to affect the content maker when providing features to the user and vice versa.

The application was supported by Chromecast which developed by Google in April of this year.

In January 2014, a Turkish user named “haramzadeler”, which means Bastards, uploaded seven audio clips showing conversations between the current president of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan and some others, including his daughter Somaya Erdogan, his son Bilal Erdogan and others.

The Turkish government has banned the access to the site. These leaks caused a lot of noise.

Many asked about why the service has been blocked for no apparent reason, although it’s just a platform for sharing tracks and not a site specialized in leaks.

SoundCloud is a technical breakthrough in the music world, and its presence is very important for millions of users on all platforms, both site users and site apps on both Android and iOS.
