What We Know About Disney Plus So Far

Back in September 2017, Disney announced its plans to create its own video streaming service. That means another service to compete with Hulu, HBO, Amazon Prime Video, and of course the market leader Netflix. These plans are slowly coming true, at this point we know the name of the upcoming service “Disney Plus” or “Disney+” as well as some other details that Disney is announcing every now and then. Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger recently said that Disney Plus is the company’s “biggest priority” in 2019”. In this article, we will mention everything that we know about Disney Plus so far.

What Content Will It Have?

One thing that we know for sure is that the new streaming platform will have high-profile exclusive content. Some movies and TV shows will be available only on Disney Plus platform. While we can’t know for sure which movies and series will be exclusively available on Disney Plus, all we can do is to follow the rumors.

Some reports mentioned that Disney’s upcoming movie collection which will include Captain Marvel, Frozen 2, Toy Story 4, Star Wars: Episode IX, and Favreau’s live-action remake of The Lion King will be streaming on Disney Plus exclusively. The company’s CEO confirmed earlier in a call with investors that Captain Marvel will be the first Disney movie that the company will maintain exclusively on the streaming service after its theatrical release, which will also make it the first Marvel Universe movie that won’t be available on Netflix.

Disney is also preparing some TV series featuring some Star Wars stories. We got to know about two Star Wars series so far, the first one is “The Mandalorian”, the second remains untitled but we do know that it will bring back the Star Wars actor “Diego Luna” as the rebel spy Cassian Andor.

Another report from 2018 by Variety mentioned that Disney is working on multiple series that will feature characters from the Marvel Universe like Loki and Scarlet Witch, those characters will be played by the same actors who played them on the big screen.

Bob Iger also mentioned that the upcoming streaming service will have a non-Disney owned content, this will include material from National Geographic that will be acquired through the 21st Century Fox magazine acquisition. “Because the Fox deal hasn’t closed yet, […] and because we need to launch the service with some volume and it takes time to ramp up, we’re buying certain products from the outside opportunistically, and we’ll continue to do that,” Iger commented on the deal.

Disney announced some other movie projects and titles for the new streaming service. Those projects include 3 Men and a Baby, Don Quixote, Father of the Bride, Flora & Ulysses, Lady, and the Tramp, Magic Camp, Noelle, The Paper Magician, The Parent Trap, Stargirl, The Sword in the Stone, Timmy Failure, Togo, and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. But whether those titles will make it to any other streaming service or not we still have no idea yet.

Other than that, Disney is planning to have around 7,000 TV series episodes, and between 400 to 500 movies available on the service when it launches. As we mentioned most of the content will be owned and produced by Disney. In addition to some other Marvel Universe, Star Wars, and Pixar titles. What might make Disney Plus different from the other streaming services in the market is the overall family-friendly theme of the service.

Availability And Price

While Disney didn’t give an official launch date for Disney Plus, other than late 2019 for it to roll out officially for subscribers. Disney promised to give the investors a look at the streaming service in the next investor meeting on April 11th.

About the price, Disney will probably try to get the subscription price cheaper than Netflix. That means that the price would be cheaper than the $8 to $14 price that Netflix has. Iger understands that this cheap price has to do with the amount of content that Disney is offering as much as being competitive when it comes to the price.

In the meantime, if you are really excited about the new streaming service. Feel free to sign up for updates at the official preview site.
