Everything You Need To Know About Disney+

Disney has announced its video streaming service back in September 2017 and everyone has since then waited patiently to find out more about what Disney+ is going to bring to its viewers. Now, there are quite a few things we know about it so we bring you the most important details about the upcoming video streaming service before its release in a couple of months. 

What is Disney+?

Disney+ is a video streaming service by Disney that is expected to compete with some of the biggest names in the streaming industry including Netflix and Hulu. Users will be able to access exclusive content through smart TVs and set-top boxes, with the plan for the first year including over 20 original series and a vast array of movies including some of the old animation classics as well. It is expected that every movie and series ever made by Disney will eventually be added to the service, all of which will be available for a monthly subscription fee. 

Disney+ streaming service will offer family-friendly content and will offer the ability for each family member to set up their own profile on the family membership, up to 7 profiles, with the parental restriction options if necessary. One of the best features is the offline viewing option meaning users will be able to download shows and movies on their phones and watch even when not connected to the internet. All series and movies will be offered in up to 4K HDR quality.

What will Disney+ look like?

The service has a pretty typical video streaming service, kind of in between Apple TV and Netflix. Based on the preview shown by the company, one third of the Disney+ home screen will be a preview of a show, while the rest is going to be row of tiles including Disney-specific properties such as Pixar, Star Wars and others. Below, there will be Recommended For You section as well as Continue Watching section for all the show you haven’t finished yet.

What will be available on Disney+ at launch?

When it launches, Disney’s streaming service will offer 7000 episodes of TV series as well as between 400 and 500 movies from Disney-specific properties including Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic. Future Disney movies will not be available on another streaming service with the first one being Captain Marvel which will be the first Marvel movie not available on Netflix, making it exclusive to Disney+. One of the most exciting news is that all 30 seasons of The Simpsons series will be available at launch. 

Some of the biggest movie titles announced by Disney for the near future including Frozen 2, Toy Story 4, live-action remake of The Lion King and Star Wars: Episode IX- Rise of the Skywalker will be available through the streaming service. For the future exclusive releases, Disney is planning to create more content based on their most popular movies. This will involve Marvel Cinematic Universe based series including those based on Falcon, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and even Loki from The Avengers, as well as Star Wars based shows such as The Mandalorian, miniseries about Obi-Wan Kenobi, series about Cassian Andor and many more. Other rumored content includes series based on Muppets series, Monsters Inc. and High School Musical.

Disney+ also announced that it is creating 10 unscripted series among which users can find documentary series about topics from Marvel’s legacy, wildlife, cooking, cosmography, travel, and design.

When will Disney+ be released?

The official launch date for North America is expected to be on 12th of November 2019 meaning the streaming service will be available for Christmas holidays and before the release of Frozen 2 on November 22nd and Star Wars Episode IX on December 20th. The service will roll out for Canada and the Netherlands on the same day, and for Australia and New Zealand the week after. The service is expected to spread across all the major markets within the first two years from the release.

What will be the price of Disney+?

Talking about the price, Disney’s streaming service is going to be $6.99 per month, compared to Netflix which is around $9 per month depending on the region. The yearly plan is going to be $69.99. The company said there is a chance the initial price might increase later on with the addition of more series and movies but this is a confirmed price at launch. Bundles with ESPN+ and Hulu will be available only in the US for $12.99. The service will be completely ad-free.
