Spotify Plus is a Budget-friendly Spotify tier

While everyone is expecting the launch of Spotify HiFi soon, Spotify is a bit busy testing out other new features, and this time, a whole new subscription tier. The streaming giant is reportedly testing a new $0.99 ad-supported subscription tier that will offer some of the currently paid features on Spotify Premium. Spotify Plus will incorporate features and elements from both Spotify’s Free and Premium tiers for a very low price.

Spotify’s Free tier allows users to listen to music with frequent ads between tracks and limits users’ ability to skip tracks to only six tracks per hour. The new Spotify Plus will still be supported by ads, but it will allow users to skip as many songs as they want, as well as pick the songs they want to stream instead of the shuffle button available on the free tier. These additional features will come for a fraction of Spotify Premium’s cost of $9.99.

The news was originally reported by users with The Verge, and later on, was confirmed by Spotify in a statement. “We’re always working to enhance the Spotify experience and we routinely conduct tests to inform our decisions,” a spokesperson for Spotify said. “We’re currently conducting a test of an ad-supported subscription plan with a limited number of our users.”

However, Spotify also stated that Spotify Plus is still in its experimental phase and may or may not make it to be officially launched. “Some tests end up paving the way for new offerings or enhancements while others may only provide learnings.”

Spotify is always working on something new. This year witnessed the launch of new personalized playlists and the new “Hey Spotify” voice command, but we are still waiting for the launch of Spotify HiFi as promised by the streaming service earlier this year.
