Google Pixel 5: release date, specs, design rumors

At the beginning of August, Google announced its latest Pixel 4a smartphone, alongside the news that Pixel 5 is not that far away. According to the company’s expectations, the device will be released at some point in autumn despite the global pandemic. We are excited to see what it will offer and which features will be debuted on the new device. Here is everything we know so far about Google Pixel 5, including design, camera and other features, as well as the latest renders that show what the device will look like.

Google Pixel 5 Design

Google has been known for maintaining its signature smartphone style for its Pixel devices as the overall look does not really change from generation to generation. But, it does add a few new treks and details that are worth knowing. Thanks to OnLeaks and PriceBaba, a very famous leaker, we got to see a full render of the Google Pixel 5. The main details include a punch-hole front camera setup, as well as the fingerprint sensor at the back. It also shows a square back camera housing with two lenses. Based on a report by Android Central, we also found out more details about the display. Google Pixel 5 is expected to feature a 6-inch OLED display, with the standard refresh rate of 90Hz. When it comes to housing, there are many rumors on what to expect, but the teaser from Google clearly suggests an aluminum frame. We are not sure yet whether the back will be made of the same material, or will it have matt glass finish.

Google Pixel 5 Features

There are a lot of rumors about the features that will be included, but there is a rumor that was in fact confirmed by Google during the Pixel 4a event: 5G connectivity. Based on this fact, we also have the idea that the device is very likely going to feature a Snapdragon 765G chipset as it has been the most common choice for 5G-compatible smartphones. Rumors regarding other internals refer to an 8GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. They also mention a 4000mAh battery capacity, combined with 15W Qi wireless charging. When it comes to software, we do know that the upcoming Pixel is going to be the first to have Android 11 straight from the box.

Google Pixel 5 Camera

According to several reliable sources including Android Central, as well as the renders that we have seen, the camera setup on Google Pixel 5 seems very obvious. The device is expected to have a dual-camera setup on the back, carrying a standard 12.2 megapixels lens and a telephoto lens. As some rumors hint at a third lens, we might even see a wide-angle lens too. On the front, we expect a punch-hole 8megapixels selfie camera lens, located in the top left corner of the screen with a minimal bezel. Of course, we still expect to see different Modes such as Night Sight, if not even an improved version of such. There is also a new feature under the codename “Lasagna”, but we are not yet sure what exactly it will include.

Google Pixel 5 Release Date & Price

As mentioned before, we can expect Google Pixel 5 to be released at some point in autumn in the following counties: US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, and Australia. The official release date has not been exactly set, but the autumn release date perfectly fits with the annual Made by Google event in the second half of October in which the phone will most likely be debuted. Other leaks have hinted at the 30th of September which is a bit sooner than anyone could have expected, but at least there is a chance we won’t have to wait too long before seeing the new Pixel. He also mentions that it will be available in Black and Green color options, but for Google, “green” can be just about any shade imaginable and probably with a very unusual name.

When it comes to price, we expect this year’s Pixel to be just a bit more affordable than the previous models. Pixel 4 base model starts at $799, while the base model of Pixel 4 XL starts at $899. Pixel 4a 5G is expected to be released at the same time as Pixel 5 does not have an official price yet, but if the rumors are to be trusted, it will be around $500, while the 5 would be at least several hundreds more.

UPDATE (28th September): Green model revealed, price and details leaked again

As we have mentioned many times so far, the new Pixel is going to be available in two colors: black and green. While all renders until now showed only the black model, we now finally have some photos that show the green shade we can be expecting, which you can see on the photo below. The color is very light and pastel with a more of a matt finish, the side button and the logo on the back are shiny in the same green shade.

Furthermore, Google Japan has accidentally shared on Twitter a video that included both design and the price of the upcoming Google smartphone. Considering how widely this device has been leaked, we are not very surprised with the design as it matches what we have seen in leaks in the previous weeks. Another not very exciting confirmation was 5G connectivity which was never in doubt considering that Google announced the feature at the Pixel 4a launch. What did matter in the whole leak is the price as no matter how many leaks we can acquire, the device price varies from currency to currency, and we can never be sure which is correct without are the reliable source which is in this case Google itself. The tweet mentions the price of ¥74,800 which converts to around $709 or €629 as we have predicted before.

UPDATE (23rd September): More renders leaked

Ahead of the event scheduled for the 30th of September, we have leaks that show the official Pixel 5 renders, revealing a couple of more details that haven’t been clear yet. Leaked by WinFuture, render shows the front and side of the device, revealing the 6 inches Gorilla Glass 6 display. We expect a 90Hz display rate and very thin bezels all around. The leak also mentions 100% recycled aluminum housing, IP68 water resistance rating, as well as 8GB of RAM combined with 128GB of internal storage. The render shows the black model, but as it was rumored many times before, there will be a green model coming too. Another interesting detail is the wallpaper which includes colorful shapes that together create “5G”, another feature we are excited to see on the new Pixel.

UPDATE (22nd September): Price and availability leaked

As previously announced, we can expect the new Pixel 5 and 4a 5G to be announced at the same time on the 30th of September. However, the actual availability of the devices in stores was not set yet and we would probably have to wait until the end of September to find out if it weren’t for a UK retailer that set the availability for the 15th of October for 4a 5G model. Even though there is a chance that the new flagship model won’t be available on the same date, it is safe to assume that it will be near that time if not on the 15th as well. The price is expected to be €629 which was confirmed by popular leaker Roland Quandt on Twitter, who also tweeted and confirmed that we can expect a Black and Green model of Pixel 5 to be announced.

UPDATE (14th September): Official launch date announced

Google has slowly started preparing itself and the audience for the event that will be held on the 30th of September. At the event, the company is going to release a new Chromecast, another Nest smart speaker, and of course, the new Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G smartphones. The event is going to be held at 2PM ET / 11AM PT and it will be online which makes quite a lot of sense as many big launches recently were not held in real life considering the ongoing world health crisis. UPDATE (4th September): New price leak

We started off September with the confirmation that both 5 and 4a 5G devices are certified by the FCC and are well into the final steps of the process before the launch. Now, thanks to another leak, we discovered that Pixel 5 is going to be much more affordable as we find out more about the price of the device. According to Technik News, the new Pixel is going to be around $700 which is significantly less than other flagships we got to see from Apple or Samsung, raising the question will the device be a cheap high-end model or an expensive mid-ranger. Furthermore, even though the source seems to be reliable when it comes to pricing leaks, the price at the end mostly depends on the local market so the currency conversion can still affect the $700 prediction.
