1.IT (2017)

IT is an American supernatural horror movie based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel of the same name. This movie is the second adaption of the novel, it was first adopted in 1990 as a miniseries. The movie tells the story of seven children in Derry, Maine, who are terrorized by the eponymous being which is an ancient evil being that goes after the children of Derry every 27 years. The children of Derry have to unite together in order to fight the bloodthirsty, dancing clown known as Pennywise, but first, they have to overcome their own personal fears. The movie was nominated for over 35 awards winning 10 awards out of them. A sequel of the movie is scheduled to be released in September 2019.

2.Annabelle (2014)

Annabelle is an American supernatural horror movie directed by John R. Leonetti. The movie is a prequel to the first The Conjuring movie that was released in 2013. Shortly after the release of The Conjuring movie, a spin-off focusing on the origins of the Annabelle doll was released, and a year after the first Annabelle movie. The movie tells the story of John Form, a doctor who buys his expectant wife a rare vintage doll thinking that it would be the perfect gift for their first child. Things don’t go as expected when one night, devil worshippers invade their home and try to summon a demon, they drip blood over the house and especially over the doll Annabelle, then the doll transforms from a source of joy into an alive object of evil. A prequel of the movie, titled Annabelle: Creation, was released in August 2017, and then a sequel, titled Annabelle Comes Home, was released on June 26, 2019.

3.The Purge (2013)

The Purge is an American horror action thriller movie written and directed by James DeMonaco. The movie tells a story in an alternative America where a totalitarian political party is voted into office following an economic collapse. This new party passes a new law that sanctions an annual “Purge”, for 12 hours each year all crime, including murder, is legal, except against government officials, and all emergency services are unavailable until 7 am. James Sandin and his family decided to stay at home during the night of the purge, protected by their security system, but an outsider ruins their plan, making them vulnerable to the outside world. The family struggles to survive the night without turning into monsters. The movie is the first installment in The Purge franchise, a sequel titled The Purge: Anarchy was released in July 2014, another movie, The Purge: Election Year was released in July 2016, and a fourth movie The First Purge which serves as a prequel was released in July 2018.

4.The Shining (1980)

The Shining is a horror movie produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick and co-written with novelist Diane Johnson. The movie is based on Stephen King’s 1977 novel with the same name. It stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, and Scatman Crothers. The Shining tells the story of Jack Torrance, a writer and recovering alcoholic. Jack accepts a new job as the off-season caretaker of an isolated historic hotel located in the Rockies mountains. He moves to the hotel with his wife Wendy Torrance and young son Danny Torrance. His son has some psychic abilities that are called “the shining” which allows him to see the history of the hotel, and he sees that the hotel had a previous winter caretaker who went insane and killed his family and himself. Later on, Jack starts to go insane influenced by the supernatural powers in the hotel, now his family is in danger, including himself. Although it was released in 1980, the movie is considered to be one of the greatest horror movies ever made.

5.Apostle (2018)

Apostle is a period horror film written and directed by Gareth Evans and starring Dan Stevens. The events of the movie happen in London in 1905, when Thomas Richardson returns to the city only to know that his sister is being held captive by a religious cult for ransom. Thomas decides to get his sister back at any cost, so he travels to the island where the cult lives as a convert to the cult. While he lives among the cult members, Thomas discovers that the cult is as corrupt as the mainland society that they claim to reject and uncover some evil secrets that he couldn’t even imagine. The movie was first premiered in September 2018, and then began streaming on Netflix in the following month.

6.The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

The Cabin in the Woods is an American horror comedy film directed by Drew Goddard. The movie tells the story of five college students who arrive at a remote forest cabin for their vacation when they start falling one after another, victims to backwoods zombies. While it seems like the zombies are attacking the students out of nowhere, two scientists are manipulating the zombies as part of an experiment. The scientists also manipulate the students by intoxicating them with mind-altering drugs that hinder rational thinking and increase libido. The movie was nominated for over 20 awards winning 8 awards out of them.

7.Annihilation (2018)

Annihilation is a psychedelic science fiction horror film written and directed by Alex Garland, based on the novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer. It stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, and Oscar Isaac. The movie tells the story of a group of scientists who enter “The Shimmer”, a mysterious quarantined zone of mutating plants and animals as part of an expedition. The Shimmer emerged from a meteor that landed in a lighthouse in Blackwater National Park in Maryland and is gradually expanding and increasing its boundaries. Many expeditions have entered the area, but only one scientist returned back after one year inside, unable to explain what happened. His wife Lina decides to join the next expedition with other scientists, but also, she was the only one to return. The movie goes as Lina is trying to remember and explain what happened with her and the crew inside The Shimmer.

8.Mama (2013)

Mama is a supernatural horror movie directed and co-written by Andy Muschietti based on his 2008 Argentine short film Mamá. The movie stars Megan Charpentier and Isabelle Nélisse as two young girls. After the sudden death of their parents, the two girls mysteriously disappear. After five years, a search party finds the girls alive and well but in a feral state as they didn’t interact with humans for the past few years. As they now live with their uncle and his girlfriend, the girls keep mentioning a person called Mama. Eventually, the one they are calling Mama appears at their uncle’s home, and it turns out it’s not a human being. The movie was nominated for several awards winning only one of them for the best horror movie of the year.

9.Oculus (2013)

Oculus is an American supernatural psychological horror movie written, edited, and directed by Mike Flanagan. The movie is based on his short film Oculus: Chapter 3 – The Man with the Plan. the movie has two different timelines, the present, and 11 years earlier. It tells the story of Kaylie, a young woman who believes that an antique mirror is responsible for the death of her parents. When they moved into a new house, the family purchase the mirror as a piece of antique, but the mirror starts to induce hallucination supernaturally, eventually causing the death of both parents. The movie received a lot of positive reviews when released.

10.Gerald’s Game (2017)

Gerald’s Game is an American psychological horror thriller drama film directed and edited by Mike Flanagan and written by Jeff Howard and Flanagan. The movie is based on Stephen King’s 1992 novel of the same name. It stars Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood. The movie tells the story of a married couple who are spending their vacation in an isolated house in the countryside. While trying new ways to add some spice to their marriage, the husband gets a heart attack and dies immediately, leaving the wife handcuffed to the bed without the keys, with so little hope to survive. Trapped on the bed with her husband’s dead body next to her, the wife struggles to survive while having hallucinations triggered by her inner demons.
